trailer wiring
I am hooking up a trailer harness to my 88 4runner and have got everything to work, blinkers, running lights, but I cant find the correct wire to tap into for the brake lights? It didn't come with the tow package so I am tapping into my wires going to the taillights, anyone know which wire I need to tap from the 4runner to get the brake light to work? Thanks.

you might try looking in your FSM. the green wire should work your right stop and turn signal. and the yellow should be the left stop and turn signal Brown is tail lights/markers/license plate light. White is the common ground.

yeah those are off the harness for the trailer lights, but off the vehicle there are two wires going from the tail and a ground and I can't get the brake to work off that? wish it was plug and play and not universal.

Gresham, right down the freeway from you, I work in clackamas though so I am out there everyday. Yeah I will try that tomorrow and see if I can't figure it out, thanks.

Did you just get a connector with a length of wire attached, if so you will need a converter (AKA black box) that takes the separate turn signal and brake and combines theme into 1 wire. If you got a kit with a converter, I would do as lummpus suggested and put a brick on, or have an able body assistant (kid or SO) hold the brake and test for the wire.
if you need a black box they have all the wires pretty well marked

also pick up a test light to test the brake lights, just have someone put they foot on the pedal while you poke around with the test light. I just tapped the one right off the brake light, usually the center bulb housing. Top-signal, center-brake, bottom-BU light.
