Toyota4x4907's 22re build-Pics!

I just went and picked up a '95 22re with a little over 100K miles, so says the owner, that was pulled because of some noise. The owner put a new timing chain set on, fired it up and said they lost oil pressure and made some noises. So I dont know what it is yet. Anyways, came with new timing set all on, extra water pump, new alternator, starter, wiring harness, PS pump, radiator, AFM and tubing, and engine stand for $250. Some might say I got screwed, but running 22res will go for $500 or more here, just the engine. Running Yotas and some not, will go for over $1000 easily. Most 2nd gen 4runners and 3rd gen p/us with a blown 3vze people price at $2000-2500 and probably sell them for no less than $1500.

On to the build. No pics yet as I dont have a camera handy and I need to get ready for work. Quick plans- engnblder O/S valve head with a cam (havent decided on which)...really thats about it so far. haha. I would love to turbo it, but probably won't happen .

Also, quick question. When getting a head from engnbldr, is there a core charge that you get back when you send him your old head? or does he not require that? I didnt see anything mentioning that on the website and would like to know so I can sell the head or not.

So, you confirmed that you blew a head gasket?

Also, check out http://www.tigerdirect.com/ for a cheap digital camera if you don't already have one/or know of the site already, so we can all watch your build.

I picked up a 10.2 megapixel Samsung a few weeks back for $75 shipped.

I've never bought a head from engnbldr but I don't think he charges a core from what I've heard. Maybe someone else will chime in with a definitive answer.

Well man, I didn't confirm it until just about 30 minutes ago while on lunch. I was grabbing a burger from McDs when my idle started to increase. Meh, I thought, just let off the brake. All is well. go back to work, park and start showing on the burger, turn the rig off. then 10 minutes later I decide to move closer to the building, turn it on, idle is high, its shaking a lot, I look out the mirror- POOF! White smoke galore. So, I'm going to try to take the next few days off, use my sick time and get a HG in her so I can get to work!
I still plan on building the other motor, but now I need to decide if I want to just replacwe the HG in my rig now and rebuild the other one for performance, or see if I can get a head shipped quickly here (unlikely) and get the performance head in my rig now. This sucks hardcore. The bottom end is probably about to give too as I get some knocking sounds at start-up while oil pressure builds. Well I'm at work and need to get off I'm kinda excited, honestly. Even though its going to suck not having a rig for a few days.

My housemate has a camera but he usually takes it to work with him so I really cant use it during the day. I'll probably buy a cheapy one this week.

Buuut..I just don't know. I went and started it just now during break and it wasn't idling bad at all, fired right up, the exhaust smells the same as it always does and always has on my 22res, the coolant is nice and clean and the oil looks fine. But, there was more exhaust plumage than seems like there should be for being about 30F. I drove it around the parking lot a little and it seemed fine. I hate this! I can't tell. I need my rig. I think I'll order an OEM head gasket tomorrow and maybe my rig will last the week so I can do a HG change over the weekend.

my 90 22RE spews out tons of exhaust when it's around 30 or 40F. I was concerned at first but in the 8 months I've owned it it hasn't used any coolant. But, if you are having erratic temp spike issues and having to add coolant, I'd venture to say just throw in a new head gasket and you'll be good. How many miles 130K?

136K now. I know how the cold white smoke is, I live in Fairbanks, Alaska and I have owned 2 other 22res over the last 5 years.

I'm not having to add coolant. I'm having to re-add the coolant that was pushed out into the overflow, which only happens when I turn the heat on.

I just got back from the dealer. Got an OEM head gasket and head bolts will be here Friday. I was planning on doing it this weekend, but realized I'm going down to see the family. I may skip out so I can fix my truck.....

When I started the truck this morning, it was running rough for about 20 seconds, sputtering really. so I'm pretty sure its the HG. Still drives fine though

As you can tell, I already took the upper intake off and was in the process of taking the lower off. The valve cover is just sitting there because I had it covering the valves. It had synthetic oil run through it. Once I rebuild it I will probably do the same.

Oh, and I just went and bought a new camera. So much nicer than my old Kodak. I consider that Kodak to be the Toyota of the cameras I have owned. Dropped it in a river, multiple puddles, snow, sand, from 10 feet onto ice. From multiple tables, got grease and oil on it. A little coolant. 4 years of abuse and the screen finally quit a few months ago and wouldn't take pictures correctly.

so, are you planning on rebuilding this and throwing in the truck or are you going to fix the head gasket then drive it for a awhile while rebuilding this?

Are those grooves on the head above the driver's side guide normal? I ask because I replaced my valve cover gasket last week and mine had the same marks right there but my guides looked perfect as yours do too. They weren't really even grooves more like scrape marks I guess.

Replace HG in truck while building this. I need my truck to get me to work so I can make money to rebuild this engine

They're there because obviously the timing chain guides broke and rubbed on the timing cover, which is why the PO of this engine put on a whole new timing set, including PLASTIC GUIDES. DARNIT! ha..... I'm a little disappointed though. He seemed to have used an aftermarket timing set, evident by the upper chain sprocket with no holes and it saying "USA" on it

quite possible. The recommended R&R interval is 80K-100K miles. My '93 22re had the timing chain and such replaced before I bought it at 87K miles and before my sister bought it at 84K. I miss that truck

What are your plans for the motor you have there? Are you gonna go with a cam or anything?

Engnbldr O/S valve head with 268 cam. Probably a cheap header. Already have a decent cat-back. mm... Maybe customish intake. If I find time and money after all this, intake-battery swap.

Just got my hands dirty taking stuff off the head and block. I took the PS bracket and part of the alternator bracket off. Started taking the lower intake mani off. Got the bolts out, fuel rail off, some coolant hoses and tubes off. Now I just need a pry bar to get the freaking thing off the head. I have it loose on one end but its stuck on the other. I think the engine might be seized though. I tried to turn it. didnt budge. Put 3 qts of oil in it, still wouldnt move. Tomorrow I'll try to put some through the spark plug holes.-sigh- good or bad idea? I want to set it at TDC for #1 piston when I take the head off...

Dont mind the messy garage. It's slowly getting cleaned up

I took all the hex bolts/nuts off. Unless I missed one, but I looked very hard.
