Picked up a 1990 2wd pickup the other day. Don't know a whole lot about these trucks. It's a decent little truck to drive back and forth to work and to the woods. It's got the 22r with 274,000 miles, freshly rebuilt, 4 speed manual, all new coolant system, and AC.

Anything I should know right off the bat about these trucks since I'm a complete newbie?

All it really needs is a paint job, and some wheels. Any suggestions on wheels for it? I don't want anything fancy, just some nice stock-ish looking 5 spoke wheels

X2 on the - keep it cool. Keep the coolant system in good order and it should last and last.

Nice little truck! I met a fellow with a 22re 2wd and he had over 400K on his.

Keep on the fluids and be sure to check the valve clearance when doing a tune up. While the valve cover is off be sure to check the driver side timing chain guide. It's easily inspected with the cover off and will save you a big hassle in the long run.

As a matter of fact I would inspect the first chance you get as i just found my guide missing and the TC starting to groove the TC cover. If let go too long the chain wears a hole in to the coolant passages and you end up with coolant in the oil. They are great runners though - the above mentioned are the only major issues i know of. Lots of knowledgeable folks here at yotatech! Welcome from one newbie to another!

The truck belonged to my dad for years. He let it run hot, like yall said, and blew the head gasket. He then sold it to a mechanic friend of his, who fixed it and sold it to me.

The truck has a completely new topend, new head, new timing chain (which was worn through the coolant passage like you stated) with guides and cover.

He also fixed the AC unit and deleted all the smog crap before he sold it to me.

It's a good little truck to get from A to B in, I'm glad to have it, just needs a clutch

Do you happen to know if the drivers side TC guide is metal lined?

Im wondering if they all are metal lned today or if they still make the plastic ones? If its plastic take a peek at every valve clearence check/tune up.
