My buddy wants a 4wd nissan. he has a 2wd 1999 pre runner.
the dealer told him that the 4 cylinders are junk an have no power. AND ABSOUNTLY NO ONE WANTS ONE OF THOSE TRUCKS...and wouldnt give him more then 3000 for it. the nissan is a 96 with 90000 miles and a inside door panel missing.. O and the main reason i posted this the retard said nissans last longer and have more power and the toyota trucks suck.

I sold my 96 Nissan xtra cab 4x4 with 190k just before I bought my 84 4runner. I hated that truck. Given I never took care of it, but the engine made so much noise. There is problems with wrist pins and rod bearings. Timing chain tensioners dont last. Throw out bearings don't last, and it had no power. I got $3200 from some poor sap. I feel more comfortable driving my 84 runner with 215K then that thing. Feels more solid, gear box is smoother and engine just sounds and runs so much smoother. Way more power. I feel bad for your boy if his does this. He will kick himself.

Funny thing, I saw it up on craigslist about 2 weeks later for $4k, its still up there 6 weeks later. I wanted to email him and ask whats wrong with it, just to be an a$$ but I didn't. Did I mention there is absolutely no aftermarket support whatsoever for that truck. Oh and the 95 and 96 and had completely different trannys and other quirks that they dont import used parts for some reason like most japanese cars, so good luck finding parts.

Let me also add that I always owned toyotas, family owns all toyotas and always has. This was the first car I bought that wasn't a toyota. I thought japanese was japanese. I was a fool and learned my lesson. Good to have a full family of yotes again.

the dealer said nobody wants a 99 prerunner 4cyl - and he would only offer him $3000? that's just retarded if you ask me, toyotas don't depreciate that much unless something is wrong with it. i think the 2.7l has plenty of power especially since he doesn't have the extra couple hundred pounds of 4wd parts to lug around. the 3.4l is really nice and all, but these days more economical cars and trucks seem more desirable for the average person. I'd try going somewhere other than the dealer if he really wants to sell it. And if he does decide to get the Nissan just tell him to put lots of cash aside for parts and recovery equipment and then ask him which you STILL see on the road - a mid 90s Toyota or a mid 90s Nissan? Who the hell names their vehicles "Hardbody" anyways???

I can't talk too much trash about Nissans as I DID own one at one point and I loved it and was bummed to sell it...but then again it wasn't technically a "Nissan", but instead it was an '84 Datsun Nissan/720 pickup (last year of Datsun) and that thing hauled ass for a little 2wd, 5spd w/Z24 engine. I never had one problem with it except one day I was really really low on gas and the fuel pump sucked up some schmutz after I decided to drift a turn. I sold it to a guy who bought it as a surprise for his son's 16th birthday...lucky kid - I made a lot of mods to that truck, but it was missing two crucial things...4wd and a Toyota emblem!!! I think the only other Nissan I would buy is a Titan, but I've already got my eyes set on that badass Tundra Diesel Dually.....

Oh yeah, and there are hardly any Nissan forums out there for support.

IMO, the older pre- "hardbody" nissans weren't as bad, with the NAP-Z engines
people used to convert them to 4wd using Spencer Low conversion kits.
but most japanese trucks are pretty damn tuff, rather have a nissan than an S10.

Before 95 fine, but something happened in 95 and then it went OBD2 and everything was f-ed. Trust me. PITA truck.

My dad has an 05 Nissan Titan with about 40K on the clock. He just had to have the radiator replaced and there's what sounds like a valve tick coming from the engine. He also had to take it in earlier this year for something else (not sure what). My Tacoma's got almost 90K, been driven hard, and wheeled moderately hard... No issues.

Don't tell me Nissans are better than Toyotas. That guy's a salesman for Nissan. What do you think he'd tell him about his Toyota, Nissan's #1 competitor?

my buddy has a 96 frontier. and i thought my truck was slow. he was in 5th gear to floor on the interstate on level ground and couldnt get it past 85. and thats with 30 inch tires.

My first vehicle was a 93 Plymouth Voyager (was passed down. Didnt really want it, but took it for time being), it was about the same.
Had that pedal nailed to the floor trying to max it out on the highway... think i hit 87-89 max. That thing had no power. lol.
I hate dodge though, they SUCK!

dude, my mom used to have a '93 Plymouth Voyager, and that thing Hauled A$$. it carried 2 of my sisters, my mom, my 110 pound dog, about 150lbs on the roof (50 over the recommended amount) me, and probably another 100 pounds in the back from Florida to Alaska in 10 days and it just needed the tranny fluid and oil changed after that . plus it had the "EAT power" button. she got it up to 113 mph on that trip passing a Semi with two trailers

Why doesnt the dude whos selling the prerunner take it to a Toyota dealership, sell it, then go to the NIssan Dealership and buy the Nissan?

Why is OBD2 the devil? I personally love it. Makes diagnosing alot of things easy as cake, no sniffer for emmissions (here anyways) as long as an OB2 car doesn't have any trouble codes stored, it passes emmissions.

Nissan's blow. The only good thing I got out of a Nissan was enough money to by my 4 runner. Had a '05 Sentra, blew a head gasket twice in 10 months. Filed lemon law suit and they bought the pos back. that was last Feb, and found the 4 runner on craigs list for $2400. Love the yota, and never going back.

I read most of these replys but when i stubbled upon Highonpottery's reply about the Tudra Deisel Dually i had to google it. That Tundra, if they make 'em, is gonna be bada$$, and i think they will make there mark with it like they did with the new Tundra, sorry for gettin off topic of the thread. Nissans i think are capable, but Toyotas have a much wider selection of aftermarket parts. Toyota all the way!

first off..there aint nothin wrong with dodge...as far as i know..lol..at least not with the 24V diesels..lol..we had an '02 quad cab short bed 4x4 with the cummins 24V diesel..i personally put over 30,000 miles on it..(in quite a short amount of time)..i took it through some mud..relined it a few times..raced it a bit..i was doin burnouts constantly..and never had not ONE problem with it..well..had to replace the ujoints in the front driveshaft..and the double cardan joint too..but thats regular maintenance..never burned a drop of oil..was very quiet..(like..abnormal noises..cummins diesels are LOUD)..my dad made a few 1000 mile trips in it..it was a great truck...parts are HIGH DOLLAR...but dont go around saying DODGE SUCKS..cuz it dont..maybe a few models do...but the diesel 4x4 we had was 100000 times better than this old toyota..in every way..had more power..got close to the same gas mileage..never had any parts to fix..was roomier..in LOADS better shape..lol..of course i do LOVE MY TOYOTA TO DEATH!!!!

i say, keep the pre-runner and do a LT kit on the front... cheaper than maintenence on a nissan...
