Towing with 92 V6 4runner with auto trans
Just wondering how the auto trannys in these hold up while towing ???
I just picked up a mint 92 4Runner v6 auto , and I want to use it to tow my Yamaha Rhino on a 5x10 trailer .
The whole package is about 2500lbs , and I will be towing in the mountains .
I tow this set up with my other 92 runner all the time without a problem , but its a 5spd .
I once heard that the auto's in these were on the weak side , but dont know if there is any truth to that .....
Will the auto tranny hold up towing that much weight ??

Mine does not have the tow package (if it was even available)

I use to tow 2 snowmobiles on a double skidoo trailer (with 6 extra gas cans0 with the truck fully packed for a week at our cottage and then drive 391kms (1 way) to the cottage with mine (no issues) but I did add an extra tranny cooler for that just in case....

YOu will definately use the od off button and the ECT button while towing. In the mountains you may also have to have it in 2nd for awhile.

I guess I will go ahead and put a hitch on it and see how it tows with the auto .

is that right next to the fuel filter? because if it is, then I do have it, but it didn't come with the tow package when I bought it. I put a hitch on it afew months ago.

Im going to open this back up, because i'm gonna start towing pretty soon. What do you guys think about towing an 18 ft bayliner (boat) with my 3.0 auto. the boat with the trailer weight is about 2800 pounds. we are thinking about a keys trip which is about 600 miles south and then back. I'm thinking that with all the luggage and the 4 people in the car, that this will probably be over 3500 pounds. You guys think i should go with another tow rig, or can she handle it? the 4runner doesn't have a tranny cooler, though I will probably put one on if I decide to use it. let me know what u think.

I tow a 20 ft enclosed trailer loaded down with all sorts of wood and saws and other various stuff everyday in the summer for my job. Never gave me any problem but Ill be installing a tranny cooler this upcoming summer considering ill be going into the job full time.

get a hayden cooler, comes with all the instalation instructions. youll need a length of flat stock to make a pair of 'brackets' to bolt under your front skid. check out robinhood150 for some pix and tips.
i put one on my 93 last summer and used it to tow a camper several times, worked like a charm. be forewarned, your fuel consumption will be much higher as you will have your o/d button 'OFF' for towing. long flat stretches you might get away with having it on but for any type of hills turn it off.
you might also consider having your tranny serviced, ie new fluid. you can do the other drive line fluids yourself, fr/rr diffs and t/case. check your u-joints while you are under there. nothing worse than being half way to your destination and finding out one is on the way out.

Puts it right where it is suggested. When in 4lo I run super cool because the engine fan pulls air through the cooler. Down behind the skidplate you won't get much air flow when you are going slow, but shouldn't be bad for towing on the highway.

Hmmm....I have a 92 4nr and bought a cooler from O'Reilly. The package came with these unique zip-ties....really strong, BTW. Anyhow, I didn't feel like cutting on my grill...was just wanting to get the cooler in quickly. So, I pulled the skid plate off, cut a piece of coated hardware cloth to make a grill for behind the plastic trim that's under the bumper. Fastened that in and mounted the cooler up behind it. I'll have to get some pics up, but it was less work and cutting and has held in really, really well even on my bumpy country roads.
Also, if your going to tow alot like I do, sythentic tranny fluid and a remote filter is a very good idea. 2 cents....
