Top radiator hose housing

What is under this housing marked in the picture. The top radiator hose goes there. It's been really hot outside in New Mexico for three weeks. I noticed motor running on hot and have been checking the cooling system. Anyway, the top hose would get hard as a rock when idling and the radiator cap off. I tapped that housing for the top radiator hose with a soft hammer and the top hose stopped acting like it was plugged. Anyway, is there a thermostat or something under this top radiator hose housing and what is going on with the top hose being hard with too much pressure. Heater warmth works minimal at best.

That is the water pump bypass inlet housing. The top part is the the housing that connects to your upper radiator as you already know, and the bottom is the actual inlet passageway into the block. I believe it was designed for maximum circulation of coolant when the water pump is circulating to the thermostat and lower hose. Sounds like you have an air-lock in the coolant system somewhere and that's why the the heater is only partly working. Try getting a big funnel and topping off the radiator with coolant when the engine is running at a cold temperature and that should burp the system. If that doesn't work try pulling a hose end from heater core and see if you can blow into it or if coolant will come out. If not you got a block somewhere. I have the same thing going on with my 22RE right now.

Did what you suggested (coolant level was a little low) and took it out for about 45 minutes driving highway and 'stop-n-go.' It was about 99 degrees outside (a cool day for Roswell). Seems to run normal. The A/C won't cool if I stop in drive for a little while but starts cooling again after taking off. I'm still using R12. Put 12 oz of it in it at the start of this heat wave. Thanks for the help. Lets hope this is it.

Very Cool Also try checking your thermostat and make sure it isn't stuck closed. I think these yota really need to have the right thermostat to run properly. I'd get a factory one at the stealership, should be about 180*? Good luck!
