Timing chain guide not broken!!!

Simple put I have searched for the issue all over the place. I always use the search key and that's why this is my first post..

Bought the truck about 2 months ago and it ran perfect except the oil pressure sensor leaked. Of course replaced it. The guy had about 3k in receipts from work had done.

A couple weeks after buying it the truck started miss firing like crazy. Did my searches and came to the conclusion that there was water in the tank because the guy we bought it from had not driven it sense 08. Put some stuff in the tank to make the water burn"forgot the name". At the same time I decided to put new plugs in. Well when I pulled the plugs there was rust or something similar so bad on the plugs there wasn't really even a gap. After doing this work the truck runs great again.

But it started making a noise that wasnt there before. It idles perfect with no noises. You can only here the noise upon acceleration around 2-2.5k. I kept telling my self its normal until the other day when I would let off the gas you could here some weird faint noise until it dropped back down to idle. So after reading I came to the conclusion that its the timing chain guide broken and when letting off the gas the chain loosens and wobbles around. Today I pulled the valve cover, checked and gaped plugs"fine", checked oil for plastic "fine", and adjusted valves. The chain guide wasn't broken as far as I could see. The chain was tight until I turned the cam gear a little. I used a long screw driver and there was about a inch play in the chain towards the middle of the chain guide.

Any help would be appreciated. The noise almost sounds like a miss fire, exhaust leak, or a diesel truck maybe.Possibly is the tensioner it self bad and not supplying correct tension. If I cannot find the problem I will end up replacing the chain just to get it out of the way.

I am guessing 22r? sounds like a rod bearing going bad to me. Most likely #4. that's what mine did. I drove almost 6000 miles in about a year with that noise before it let go.

Well you would think if its a rod bearing it would make the noise all the time

not really, rods only take the brunt of engine torque when under high load. ie above 3000 rpm, and when unloading the engine, ie taking foot off the gas. If the bearings are just starting to wear, it will only rap under these circumstances. Eventually what it will start doing is rapping a few seconds on startup. Almost like a timing chain will do, but that's only because the oil pressure is low and not filling to void left by over worn bearings.
I did the same as you as it was the least expensive way, I replaced the timing chain when I first bought the truck thinking the noise was the chain guide or a stretched chain, noise stayed until it started getting worse to where i could not control it by engine rpm or gas pedal position. ABout 6,000 miles and a year later, bearing finally let go.

here is the reference thread when I confirmed my noice was infact a rod bearing and not the timing chain.

Don't get me wrong, it can still be a "stretched" worn chain or a bad chain tensioner as well.

Your right, You'll know when it finally goes. RIght before the rod to crank clatter, I heard the bearings actually spinning in the journals. 5 miles later on the freeway before I could pull off it went, I limped it off driving a little over a mile like that.
