timing chain wore through cover
from the thread title you can probably guess that my timing chain wore through the cover on my 93 22re, well i guess it did anyways because one day this brownish liquid started spewing out of the motor after a year and a half of hearing the chain grinding at the cover. I was just waiting for this to happen because the motor is bad anyways and has well over 300k on it and i have another mint one waiting to go in. I was wondering however is it just the cover thats gone now or is the whole block now destroyed?

I just went through this with my 94' 22RE. Pulled the head because I thought I had a blown head gasket from a failed thermostat, but once it was apart I discovered that the chain had worn through the timing cover. That caused the oil/coolant mix hence the hg failure. I also found some pitting on the block between #1 and #2 cylinders, I believe that the over heated coolant/oil mix was trapped under the metal portion of the hg where it fractured and things went south from there. There no telling what unknown problems can stem from a known problem until you get in ther and look at things. I decided to have the engine rebuilt since it had 180,000 mi and the oil had been mixed with coolant.
