timing chain with no marks or bright links

timing chain with no marks or bright links

my toyota had jumped timing and when i got it tore down the timing chain had no marks on it or bright links nothing at all, how do i line the chain up correctly?

What model, year, etc.... On another vehicle I had a similar problem, in that my son and my neighbor couldn't find the links. I came downstairs and found them. They were just slightly different in coloration. If you are working on a 22re, are you able to see the timing marks on the crank and the camshaft sprocket?

With the 3.0 v6 vze engine, you don't need the marks on the belt (it doesn't use a chain), but if you line up all of the marks it works quite fine. I double check it by turning the crank all the way around twice. The cams turn at half the speed of the crank. The marks should be in alignment again after having rotated the crank twice.

Check the cam sproket alignment mark and the crankshaft sproket for the alignment mark.

Your new chain (if you got a good kit) will have marks on everything.

If i remember right, the timming marks are on the cam and crank gear, not the timming chain.

There are marks on most good chains that alight with the marks on the cam sprocket and crank sprocket.

Makes it super easy!

When I did mine a few weeks ago, my chain and sprockets looked great so I resued em. One side of the chain had the discolored links. It took forever to find em because they were just a slightly lighter colored link.

If I wouldn't have found em, I was gonna search for how many links were between the two timing marks.

yeah i know all that was just wondering on how to line the chain up on the sprockets since it didn't have anything on it itself. now on the bending valves part, my cam and crank is a 12:00 and my rear rocker arm on the intake side is way out like you can't even adjust that valve, i bet that one's bent?

and i never understood why the chain had to be on a certain way since the sprockets have marks on them?

It just needs to have the correct abount of teeth on each side for proper tension. The marked links just make the process easier.

so if i can't distinguish any type of marks on mine how can i make sure its right counting links?

answered your own question- count the links.
have the same number of links on the left as on the right but not exactly that way: put one link at the top, horizontally, and mark it, then have the same number on the left as you have on the right, and you should have one link horizontal at the bottom- mark that link.
Now you have a chain with timing marks. Line one link up with the cam sprocket mark and the other link up with the crank sprocket mark.

what are symptoms of a bent valve? i have one rocker arm that's really loose #4 intake and you can even screw it down to adjust the valve its so bad. could that be a bent valve?
