Timing Chain, 22RE

I know I need to replace the chain since I have 160K, and for all I know its still stock. For no other reason than I will probally get a bit of performance back from an unstreached chain.

I have been trying to talk myself out of it since if I pay to have it done its 1600 or so, and if I do it myself there goes my weekend, and I already have a clutch, and exhaust to install in may before I go on my annual Manashtash wheeling trip.

Here is my question, what is the reccommended replacment interval by Toyota, anyone know?

Also what chain to use? I used the LC single chain last time I did one, on my 95. But this engine is closer to dead than new and dont really think I need to spend that much $$ on it, but I could be wrong. I have 160K and blow oil on startup, about half the time, which I know could mean nothing but.... I also have a chatter/rattle at idle that developed last summer. I thinks its the throwout bearing, but it very well could be the timing chain talking thru the crankshaft.

What is reccommended?

Do you know who makes that kit?

There has to be a reason, other than discount, that its 1/3 the cost of a LC kit.

I dont think I need the best, but at least OEM quality is a must.

Is that so you get two steel guides?

Yeah, that is right. Engnbldr doesn't think you need steel guides for both sides. He says he has never seen one of the sides fail, can't recall which one.

I just got an email from him. He says there isnt one needed on the pass side since there is no water jacket to protect there.

Its amaizing the price spread of kits.

OEM full kit is a bit over 100
engnblder is 64
DOA is 275
LC is 170

Hard to decide what to do, I guess in any of them you can get a bad chain..

I doubt I am looking at going another 160K on a chain, so I wouldnt think I need a $$ one, but even OEM ones have failed at 80K. I'll most likly do the LC again...I know its a good kit.

hmm maybe i wont get the steel rails i thought it would be better than the plastic ones cuz you have to do all that work just to change the timeing chain and if one of the guides broke later on you would have to take it all apart agian

The steel guides are far better from what I have heard. Its such an ordeal to do a timing chain that I dont think I am going to mess around, i will probally get the LC kit, it as steel guides also.

Luckily I was planning to change coolant in May also.

As far as I can tell, it doesn't rattle or anything. Am I on borrowed time? Is it normal to have lasted this long if it's original or would it have been replaced?

I called toyota and they said there is no scheduled replacment, just as needed. I just dont was as needed to be on the trail. He said usually it starts slapping before something breaks.

Yes, but I beleive that LCE and DOA use a higer quality chain and sprocket. Just what you want to buy.

so it wouldn't be surprising that mine has lasted 200,000 miles?

I'm entertaining the idea of trying to replace it myself. I've never done anything that fun yet, though. What should I expect to pay if I chicken out?

I know there's a lot of wrenchers around me in CO and I'm not opposed to paying a buddy to do it if I can watch/help. any takers?

yeah thats one way to do it. There isnt anything difficult about it, just a lot of work. 1400 of the 1600 is labor, since the head has to come off.

I am going to wait to buy any parts until I get my new clutch in since the block/head shop mechanic said my noise was my throw-out bearing. And since he drives a 22RE as well, I am going to assume he knows what a bad timing chain sounds like. I also have an e-mail into my father-in-law to see if they ever had it done, they owned it from 80-150K, my fingers are crossed.

I know they put about 3 clutches in it during that time, cheap clutch and 4hi wheeling = no clutch life. Never figured out why my bro-in-law never would use 4lo...personally i only use 4hi on snow coverd hardball, other wise its all about gearing.

these things will break the guides and rattle against the cover for a LONG time before you'll run into major trouble.

most of the time the chain busts the driver's side guide, the passenger one is usually left intact. i don't have any worries about EB's kit, i think it's gonna outlive the rest of my engine since it's already got nearly 200k on it.

Good to hear, I am just away from my truck and have nothing better to do than worry about what repairs to do to it....

I have a valve job due when I get home so I'll give the timing chain and guides an inspection....I am still banking on my noise being my throw-out bearing....

A few points of reference:

My chain went at approximately 125k

Got it all replaced and a valve job for $900 at a trusted non dealership mechanic but that pricing is 10 years old

Got the same story about not worrying about it til "you hear some slapping, especially under load" But that was the tricky part. Mine made noise for about 3 days before it went, but it sounded like a tap or snap like a spark plug wire that was disconnected, not like a slapping sound. Sooo... I didn't pick up on it til too late.

4x4nala, I have purchased a head gasket and bolt kit from engbldr and it was top notch. If you're going to be in deep enough for a valve job, I would spend the $64 and do the chain as well just for the peace of mind.
