Timing belt- problem getting cam alignment "perfect"
Hey guys-Possibly stupid question for ya....
I am finally getting me truck back together, and am having an issue getting the passenger side cam to exactly line up with the match mark on the cover. I have the belt on tight and the marks lined up on the crank and drivers side cam, but the mark on the passenger side cam is exactly 1/2 tooth advanced.
The mark on the timing cover lines up with the "valley" on the gear directly to the left (counter-clockwise from) of the tooth that has the mark on the cam. There is no way to correct this that I can see, as it is not a whole tooth off.
Everyone I've seen do this that posts pictures here always has all the marks exactly lined up. So, I thought this was weird and tried putting the belt on several more times, with the same results. The belt is as tight as it can be. I thought maybe I was sent the wrong belt, but it seems to be the right one from what little information I can find online- Mistuboshi CD154 on belt, TB 154M and "078 51014 094" on box.
Is this a problem? Will the belt stretch and compensate for the 1/2 tooth?
Thanks for any help/suggestions... I just want to get this damn thing put back together and drive it! BUT, I don't want to have to go back in there anytime soon! I keep running into all these stupid little problems that nobody else ever seems to have!

Thanks for the links, but I don't see one that relates to the problem of being just one-half tooth advanced on the passenger side cam gear. If I move the pass. side cam to the left when putting on the belt, it will then be one-half tooth retarded....
I completely understand how easy it is to be a whole tooth off one way or the other, that belt is a tight fit. BUT- I don't have any idea how to compensate for just 1/2 of a tooth (in the "valley" between the actual "teeth" of the cam gear) off. I see no way to adjust for this at all

I had a similar problem when I did my 93. This was about 5 years ago so I may not remember perfectly but I think I had the belt on the crank pulley, then pulled it as tight as I could by hand up to the driver side cam, turned the cam pulley slightly towards the outside to line up the teeth and then pulled hard to the passenger pulley. It was off by about 1/3 of a tooth. I turned the pulley towards the centre to line it up and after installing the tensioner everything was fine.
I found the secret is to pull the belt as hard as you can between the pulleys.
