Timing a 22RE
I just did the head gasket on my 94 Toyota and set the timing chain and everything right, but now i need to put the distributor back in and don't know how to set it at base timing and also need to know the firing order on the distributor and on the motor. Thanks for the help.

Im pretty sure the firing order is 1-3-4-2. But im looking forward to this thread to because i could learn a little more about timing. Plus whats funny is i just did the same thang and i have a 94 yota p/u

firing order is as baseball said 1342.
now bring up #1 piston @TDC on compression stroke!
then make sure that the harmonic balancer pulley mark is lined up with the 0 degree mark on the timing number tab. then put the distributer in with the rotor pointing at the #1 plug wire on the cap!

ok yea, that sounds right. I remember doin that. and you know that the #1 piston is at TDC by puting a screw driver in the #1 piston spot by taking out the spark plug. Then turn the pully untill it hits.

Cool, i already have the motor at tdc and all that i just needed to know how to put the distributor in and how the wires go. So my only other question is which one is 1 on the cap and what is the firing order on cap and block? Thanks.

the firing order on the cap is 1342.
number one on the cap should be marked.

typically, when the distributor is installed, #1 ends up at about a 45 angle up and towards the front of the vehicle. then the other cylinders connect in a clockwise rotation around the distributor
so if you imagine the terminals on the cap make a square, #1 is top left, #3 is top right, #4 is bottom right, #2 is bottom left.

Get it at TDC on compression stroke. Push the distributer in with the rotor at 12 o'clock and it will rotate counter clockwise a bit. This will get you close enough to start it and set the timing using a timing light.
