time for some good brakes...a little input please

i have an 86 xtra cab 4x4 its my daily driver im running 16" wheels already and i have crappy brakes when sweethearts stop fast or pull out in front of me so its time to fix them but rather thanfix the half ass stockers i want to go rear disc and upgrade the front...i like a lot of us am on a budget but want to get this right the first time and will squeeze out some $ within reason where its worth it so whats the trial and error coming up with whats working the best guys help me out with ur knowledge and sources please cuz im ready to move on to some fun stuff

This is the build up section. It's used for members to post build threads. If you have tech questions they'd be better off in the SUV and Truck Tech section where people go to ask and answer technical questions.

Anyway, get the master cylinder, brake booster, and calipers off of a V6 second gen 4Runner. Get good quality ceramic pads (for a V6 second gen), and overhaul the drums. There's nothing wrong with drum brakes. They are reliable as is and work plenty good. I don't see all the rave of rear disks. In stock form I can lock up the rear tires with the e-brake so there is no reason for a disk upgrade. Waste of money in my opinion plus parts are that much harder to get. If you do want to upgrade the drums you can put wheel cylinders from an FJ-80 on the rear. They bolt in exactly like stock but they have a slightly larger piston diameter.
