Havent ever had that happen before. I bet it did make some crazy noises if the cap was spinning inside the ends. They are pressed, not sure what you could do to tighten it back up without getting a new shaft. Is it a daily driver?

yeah that's what I figured. It's not my daily. I'll pick up another driveshaft and experiment with a couple light tack welds to hold this one in place for the time being

Yes, even though the u-joint cap has spun inside the eye and has worn away some material, it can be tightened up. I learned this at a local driveline shop. You first take the u-joint out of the eye. Then you heat up the enlarged eye with an oxy-acetylene torch until it's red hot. Let it slowly air cool - don't quench to cool it. It will now be a press fit again.

hmm... didn't think of that. thanks for that tip. I used a punch and peaned some of the inside of the ears then the caps pressed in tightly.

You know what I just realized today after 2 years which was pointed out by the guy I picked up a new driveshaft from today? Mine is on backwards. Slipyoke is by the 3rd member and the solid section is up by the transfer case. I don't know if that really matters but I'll switch it back around when I put the new one in.
