Tilt steering fiasco-HELP!!!

OK, I'm doing a tilt column swap into my 90 4x4. I read all the old threads on here and everybody says that it's a direct swap no problem and the electronic doo dads like intermittent wiper etc. are plug and play. Not so much for me for some reason. I don't know I always seem to run into problems when I do projects! I took out the old column and went to swap in the new column from a 92 4runner. first problem- the main connector has a different shape than the old connector. I have to swap on the old part from the the old column so I will lose the intermittent wipers! I can live with that. The other problem is that when I went to slide the steering connector over the steering shaft it was very tight so I just put the column up to the mounts and put the top nuts on. When I reached down to the splined connector, it didn't reach far enough. I took the column of and measured them. The tilt column is almost an inch shorter that the old one! WTF! If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Thanks!

I don't know, according to EVERYTHING that I've read, this is plug and play for all of the 89-94 trucks. I can't believe with all the people who've done this swap nobody ran into a problem?

I did the swap and It was plug and play but I got a tilt out of a truck not a 4 runner, mayby they are different? When you mount the column up I had the same inch difference but I had it mounted wrong you almost need to put it in at an angle because Toyota put a nub to hold the column on so when your unbolt it it doesn't fall on your head. Took me a few to figure it out but it was easy once I did. Good luck!

Well, I checked it-no dice. I'm still stuck with a short shaft (that's what she said lol). I can't believe that I bought the ONLY steering column shorter than normal on the whole planet. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Ok, in case anyone's interested, guys from another forum said that I need the steering shaft from the firewall back from a 4runner. Keep this in mind if you do this swap.
