One version is, the other is a entire assembly.

I know the years are different but my 87 4Runner and another 88 ext. cab I had both had the later type of bearing. Neither of them had ever been changed out to the best of my knowledge...

Thanks for those links shane, that is exactly what I had in my hands when I was putting in the transmission for my 1993 pickup (I know I have a different model than the guy that started the post, sorry but I didn't want to start another thread since the topic was so related). Next time I will remember that two different bearings existed and there was a switch over from one style to another in 1989. Thanks

I understood the original post... I'm saying there are two different designs and I have found the newer style in older trucks where it shouldn't be. The part is COMPLETELY different and does not press on. I even pryed open the housing holding the bearing to compare the two bearings (the one for a 86-88 to the one actually on my w56b in my 87') and they were NOT the same. I went back and found the part for the newer trucks was exactly what was in my truck. I have found this on 3 of my own trucks and they were original.

When I pull the transmission on my 87' 4Runner to replace the bearings in a few weeks I am going to replace the clutch. I will post pics of what comes in the kit vs what is actually in my truck.

Cool, I look forward to seeing those pictures. I used the old throwout bearing, but I am keeping a going to get a backup old style throwout and a new style throwout bearing just as backup. I think your pictures of the clutch install will help clear up the situation though, thanks.

Here is the throw out bearing that was in my truck (1987 4Runner) next to what comes in the kit for a 1987. I have a W56B transmission. The part that came out of my truck is what is on the newer trucks. I have seen this on a few other trucks as well.

I wanted to share this with everyone so if anyone else runs into this issue they can find something about it.
