i am kinda having engine issues. its a 22re. i was in there last month to replace the head gasket, and wasnt overly impressed by the condition of the cylinder walls. no cross hatching whatsoever, and there where some scratches i could feel with my fingernail. the one thing that concerned me most was one scratch actually went around the circumference of the cylinder wall, not up and down. i am hoping its a scratch and not a crack, i dont know the likelyhood of a crack like that. so...i think i am looking at repowering my truck. i just dont know which way to go. i see rebuilt engines all the time with some crazy shipping rates and core charges. but what kind of money am i looking at if i pull my motor and send it over to be rebuilt? basically, is it much cheaper to rebuild mine or just get a rebuilt one? with the economy the way it is, i want to make sure i am paying my mortgage, not a truck payment...

I wrench a few things myself, but when it comes to engine internals, I'll be the first guy to send it to a mechanic. It's my daily driver and I want it done right, and right away.

I'm starting to burn oil fairly regularly, called for a quote on replacing rings, honing out cylinders, etc. The mechanic told me to check out a website called Jasper Engines. I said wait a second, he said no really. He quoted me 23 hours of labor at $80 per hour, plus parts, close to $3000. New engine is like $800 from Jasper. That's just the lower end, you'd have to swap your intake, and everything else over.

Anyway, I don't claim to know that that much in the way of powerplants, just what I was quoted and what I learn on here, thankfully.

I took my bottom end to a shop and had it done. Then I ended up taking the head and getting that done and putting it all in myself. My recomendation would be to get yours done at a shop as a longblock. That's what I wish I would have done.

i get dealer pricing from jasper - $1800 for an engine from jasper. as far as r&r on the engine, no problem. but someone with alot more experience would be doing the rebuild. can someone give me an idea as to what kind of money a shop will charge me to rebuild my engine?

kc - was that 3 large for him to do everything, including r&r?

I just had my engine totally rebuilt at a local shop.. They quoted me parts and labor, including balancing, $2K... That was the drop off price, me and a buddy did the remove and reinstall... Im really happy with how it turned out, only wish i spent an extra $100 and put a bit better cam in. Mine is an 87 22RE that had 380K on it.. runs way smoother now, bit more power, and i get better mileage.

Yeah, and that may be a little on the high side. The techs labor plus parts would come out to around $2400 to $2800. You're getting quotes of $1800 from Jasper for a complete engine I'm assuming. Yeah I'd be all over that.

Ive been building these and installing them for people for about 5 years now. I charge 2,000-3000 for a rebuilt long block INSTALLED with a full spec sheet, rebuilt started, all parts cleaned, new alternator, new waterpump, new thermostat, new belts and anything else that is worn is replaced(thats why the price varies). I was trained by a trained toyota expert in the field for more than 50 years. Just a long block is 1600 with core or 2000 for w/o the core. Watch out though, because if it isn't rebuild able they wont give you a refund, and I do.

I've done a couple 22rs and my machine work ends up between $400 and $600. then you gotta buy the engine kit or buy them individually. another 3-500. then a clutch and all the lil stuff you didn't plan on getting.... few hundred prob. Then time to assemble

I'm having a 1994 22re rebuilt at Toy Doctor in Tualatin Oregon right now for $2,500 total. R & R and 1 year, or 12,000 mile warranty on the work. I chose to rebulid vs. crate or all ready rebuilt because when you have yours rebuilt you know what is done to it. A long block from a rebuilder could be anything inside, you will never know.
I'm getting a printout of every single thing they are doing so I think it's pretty fair on price. Tended to be the going rate and I called 6 shops and rebuilders. I'll upgrade after the year warranty runs out, probably buy the LC Engineering upgrade kit for $950 with the bigger throttle body, better cam, headers, and custom air intake.

I paid $550 for machine work, and $400 in parts, and did the rest myself.
Pistons 20 over, .268 cam, OS Valves, etc..
Shes got alot more umph now.
All of the knick knacks and hoses I ended up buying brought the finished total to around $1500. All of those $20 Schucks runs add up

Off-the-shelf rebuilts are a gamble. Better to have it done by a real shop. My ATK o-t-s rebuilt started burning and leaking oil right after the 30K mile warranty was up. Always made bottom end noises which got worse as time went on. Had timing chain tensioner problems right from the beginning(I know now!). A real loser. Finally, at about 60K miles had it rebuilt(at great cost since so many of the innards were un-reusable) and even though I've only got 300 miles on it, I can tell this engine is assembled, and runs, correctly.

I rebuilt my 22re myself and have about 1600 in it so far.Engnbldr stock head,261 cam,500 in machine work.Engnbldr kit, new clutch,waterpump,and lots of trips to the parts store.
