depends on your defonition of "rebuild".
I did mine recently(still not quite done):
new pistons
ring
main bearings
rod bearings
thrust washers
gaskets(duh!)
timing chain/set
oil pump
water pump
cam
I also replaced the head with a new casting(Street RV) including new valves and all the stuff in the head.
My parts cost me a grand total of $1000($488 for just the head) all purchased from Ted at www.engnbldr.com AWESOME guy to deal with. He has everything you will need. Stuff like new filters(oil and fuel) just go to NAPA for.
If you have a place to work, and some pretty standard tools it's not a difficult job, but it can be time consuming. So don't expect to do it in a weekend. Hell it took me an entire day just to scrape off old gaskets. I had to buy a couple of tools: ball joint seperator, piston ring compressor, cylinder honing tool.

Theres a place in out of texas, you can get reman. Head for $350 and free shipping, you just put your old head in the box and a label comes with it to send your old 1 back to them free of charge.. I got 1 from them and have been well pleased.... I found it through google , though for the life of me i can't remember the name.. I have the invoice put up though if any one is really interested

In addition to the costs of the parts, it's the machine work that costs.. Anywhere from $400-$800, depending on what you get done.
