Thinking about doing an exhuast cutout, have some questions
I've been thinking about incorporating an electic exhaust cutout into the exhaust system of my '87 4WD pickup. I want to be able to keep the stock exhaust for it's quietness, but yet be able to switch to a louder exhaust as I see fit. But I don't know of a company that makes a 2" cutout. The smallest on that I've found is a 2 1/4" cutout, but I need a smaller one since my exhaust is only 1 3/4". Does any body know of a company? Also, what would be a better option for the cutout portion of my exhaust? A glasspack or an actual muffler? I really don't want my truck to sound like a rice-burner, but I also don't want it to be deafingly loud

I used to want a sleeper too, but my wife proved me wrong.
A well tuned exhaust, the appropriate muffler and everything matched and carefully chosen will perform as well as you want, and won't require you to pull some knob or tweak a lever or whatnot.
You're not running a V8-Trans-Am car here now, are you?

No, but I am only 18, that should say everything . And besides, the cops around here can be real jerkoffs when it comes to how loud your vehicle is. Just one more reason for a selectable exhaust......

as I mentioned above, a well chosen and tuned exhaust will perform as well as any system with cut-outs and the like.
a well chosen and tuned exhaust will not require cutouts
you could run 2 1/4" cut outs for EACH cylinder and it will NOT run as well as any aftermarket 4:2:1 tri-y header, nor as well as the cheapest 4:1 header.

By your sig, I see ur 87 is a 22r; not sure if it would be the same with the carbed as with the RE, but an open header sounds rediculous with these motors. I cut mine and stuck it out the side for a weekend of wheeling, and it's sounded like a freeking tractor at low RPMs, and higher RPMs sound like some sort of old air plane; sounded retarded, and I regret doing it. Put some sort of muffler after the cutout if you end up doing it.
But I don't understand it, cuz if your going through all this trouble for an exhaust, just through on a header and cat-back system. You can make it sound mellow enough to where people won't think much, but it'll still wake the truck up a little bit.
Trust me dude, I was your age not too long ago, and after doing the same stuff for the same reason, when it comes down to it, it's a waste of time and money in the end. The 22r and 22re were not by any means meant to be put in the PU or Runner and consider it a sleeper... unless you do some mad crazy boosted buildup (my future plans , but shhhh, don't tell anyone), then I could see your point.
EDIT:
Noticed one more thing on your sig. 242k miles and your trying to race people with it? Comon man, the motor's lived a good life if it's lasted that long; be easy with her, lol.

If you can get the most performance possible from an exhaust sytem that meets regulations, why spend more money for an exhaust system that isn't going to get you more performance?

might as well say that
you have a car that can break the speed limit and goes 90 miles per hour...
and
you have a car that can break the speed limit and goes 90 miles per hour but it's muffler is louder.
What The Frack Ever.

I do plan to put some sort of muffler after the cutout. And besides, I just want the sound. I've heard a truck around here that sounds like a supra, and it does have a 22R, I just never asked him what kind of exhaust he had. One thing that he told me though was that all it had was an exhaust. And trust me, I am easy on it (redline is 3000)

Watch the new transformers movie and then read the quote in my signature and you'll get it. It has nothing to do with me likeing cops or their cars......

ok, I get the sig now (not a bad movie if I say so myself), but was the reference to the sig suppose to be an insult? if so, sorry for putting in my .02, I'll just let you go about your business...

Because I can. And besides, here in Taos as long as it rolls down the road, it meets regulations

3000 redline? how do you ever get moving? i shift mine between 3500 and 4000 almost every time.
getting on the freeway, i'll get it up to 65ish before ever shifting out of third.
it likes it.
