Exclamation They had to cut down my spare.

My cousin borrowed the truck and the tire blew. He said he broke his pinky.

So AAA was called and they couldn't get the spare down. They then towed it to a shop, and they couldn't get it down without cutting something.

Here are the tools that I have.

Am I missing something here that cutting was necessary?

Looks like everything you could need is there, unless the hoist was seized. do you keep it lubed up? If not, that can and has happened...

We had a tire bubble on a long trip through Death Valley on my friends pick-up. The previous owner had put a master lock on the spare. We were able to drill the lock and get it down...

Those chain mechanisms can get clogged with dirt and rust easily.

i had to cut my down to get it out because it was rusted too bad to move it so i just cut everything out having to do with the spare and it's currently sitting in the rear until i get a roof rack to put it on top.

I just cut mine off a couple weeks ago. I was putting a new exhaust system on my truck, and it was in the way. It was frozen from 20 years of rust and dirt, so I didn't have a choice.

i got rid of mine. We had to cut it out. i was rebuilding the runner and put on a factory spare tire carrier. You would be (ok i was) surprised that only five spot welds hold i in place. On the donor one of the five spot welds was not even holding.
I welded in the the internal structure and all is good now. it lines up and works fine.

Common for the chain to rust up.

I lube the thing as part of seasonal change over maintence (swap to winter tires and back)

I drop mine a couple of times a year so it gets some use and I lube it at least once a year.
