if you are asking which one is the best overall engine I would say that the 22RE is the best engine that came stock.

dude, research. People will tell you that the 22re is the best engine that came stock in those years. The 3vz-e is refered to as the 3.slow. As the name implies, it is a weak engine with lots of headgasket problems. Some people have really good luck with the 3.0, but most do not like the engine. The ultimate engine to go into these year trucks is going to be the 5vz-e, or the 3.4. But that takes lots of time and money to fab and have all the parts.

Holistically speaking, I would have to say the 22RE. I had a 3VZ-E one day and by the time I drove it home from where I bought it had problems.

Well, I always like to answer in these threads because I'm about the only one
it seems who likes the 3VZE. Its not powerful, but neither is the 22RE. Its
not fuel efficient, but for its size neither is the 22RE. Yeah its got its own
set of problems (headgaskets), but, again, so does the 22RE (timing chain,
rod knock.)

Not to say the 22RE is a bad engine, because it is about the farthest thing
from it. I just think that a 3500 pound pickup truck/SUV needs a little more
than a 4 cylinder engine. I like the way my 3.0 runs, especially on the trail
its a nice engine it has torque, but you sure won't spin a tire

I've had pretty good luck with mine, anyway. One head gasket issue, and
thats realy been the extent of the problems.

^ I agree that a pickup that heavy needs a little more than just a 4 cylinder motor, and that is why I went and found a turbo toyota pickup. It has the 22rtec motor in it stock, but the tiny stock turbo sucks.

I just upgraded to a bigger turbo and different manifold, and you should feel it when it hits full boost! It scoots now, for the stock 4:10 gears I have in it, and the 35 inch tires. The 3vz is a great motor if you take care of it, but it does seem slow to me for a v6. It all comes to personal preference when deciding which motor to go with. I personally am going to stick with my turbo 22re and throw a megasquirt fuel management on it, and go from there.

the 4cyl toyota trucks ive had, an 87 22r & a 90 22re, both 2wd with automatic, didnt do well on the freeway in so-cal. 70 to 75 is about it.

my 2wd 3.0 will cruise in the fast lane at 80 to 90 no problem.

it will also gain speed uphill, which my 4 cyl trucks wouldn't do.

22r & 22re need a 5 speed.

First off, neither will be very fast. I think both can be good motors.

I have a 22re and a 3.0 and the 3.0 is way better on the highway.

I think it depends on what you use your truck for. For wheeling and around town the 22re is great. If you do alot of freeway driving the 3.0 will be better.

I have had no problems with either motor. Ultimately I would like a 3.4 in the truck and a 2.7 in the 4runner...

I have a 3vze and I love it. Yeah.. what people say about the headgasket is true.. and I've changed mine as well as almost everyone else... but it runs VERY well.

Both engines have their flaws, and the 22re is just too small for me. Not that the 3.0 is ideal as far as power and size - but after riding on the highway in my buddy's 22re, I will never own one.

If you're looking to buy - find a 3vze you like and get the VIN#. Call a dealership with the VIN and see if the headgasket recall has been performed.. If not, buy the truck and schedule an appointment to get a free HG replacement (ask about steering linkage as well).

I didn't buy my 4runner to race anyone.. but I want to be able to go up hills in town without struggle. My 3vze does that without an issue.

I don't think you're going to get much of an objective, non-biased answer to this question...as a lot have the 22RE, and a lot have the 3.0...everyone has their favorite and their likes and dislikes about both engines. I love the 22RE, and I've driven a 3.0 Toyota...but, as far as ease to work on, I have no troubles with the 22RE, and I've done plenty of work on it thus far (never a headgasket though ). But, I'm knocking on a lot of wood with that comment

If you want to talk about an engine that's hard to move around in to work on, then my 92 FJ's 3FE is definitely one I wish I didn't have....and she's not doing so well these days...needs some attention that I just can't give it right now But both of my Toyotas are going strong nonetheless...188,000 on my 22RE and over 207,000 on my 3FE (the 92 is going to be replaced with a nice new '08 FJ Cruiser this fall sometime..I'm looking forward to that day ).
