Testing my Hubs

First off thanks everyone for helping me with my 4runner problems, i finally locked my ADD actuator in 4wd and put some aisin manual hubs on, now when i turn on the car the 4wd light comes on(finally got 4wd). Now i was wondering about how to test everything to make sure its working right before i go drivin it. I just got done jacking up the front, and spinning the front tire; the hubs are in free, and the driveshaft from the t-case to diff spins, so i held the driveline and spun the tire and i could the driveline in place while i spun it, then i locked the hubs and spun the tire and the same thing happened i could hold the driveshaft in place while spinning the tire. this is all in 2wd and in nuetral. i thought if i locked the hubs in, that i shouldnt be able to hold the driveshaft in place while spinning the tires but could be wrong. now in 4wd, i cant spin the shaft at all with the hubs free or locked, so does this all sound like its working properly? or should i not be able to hold the shaft with the hubs locked? Thanks again and ill stop bugging you guys when im all done i promise

Something is amiss. If you have the ADD actuator locked, with the hubs locked you should not be able to spin either front CV axle, or the front driveshaft.

With the hubs UNLOCKED, you should be able to spin both CV's, AND the front driveshaft. Doesn't matter what gear you're in as long as the truck is in 2wd.

thats what i thought so if i lock the hubs, in 2wd i should be able to spin the tires and the driveshaft shouldnt move right? any ideas why? it sounds like the manual hubs arent disengaging right doesnt it?

If you are concerned the hubs are not working properly, put the truck down, lock the hubs and try to manually turn the front cv axles. They should rotate a tiny bit then lock.

Then unlock the hub, turn the cv axle in the reverse direction and it should become free again.

Also, if there is too much grease in the hub body they will sometimes not lock or unlock completely/immediately.

Before I took mine apart and cleaned/re-lubed them sometimes there was enough drag that when the hub was unlocked and I rotated the tire the cv/ front drive shaft would turn slightly.

lowered the truck, locked the hubs and tried to spin the cv and it was locked, unlocked the hubs and tried to spin the cv and it was locked,so that means the hub isnt disengaging right. i didnt think there was much to go wrong with them maybe the spring behind the dial or something? also before i bought them the guy packed them full of grease so maybe thats why, but it seems like i could work it unlocked if it was grease, i tried and it definitly seemed locked, also i tried spinning the driveshaft but it only spins about 3/4 inch(cuz its locked), but i could see the cv's twist about a 1/4 inch or so also.

Hmm.. maybe the spring is not properly seated inside the guides in the clutch. So when you turn the dial it is not pulling the clutch back.

You can see the guide cut through the inside splines in this pic, and that the spring actually popped out of them in this pic also.

Should be pretty easy to check, just take the cover off, rather than removing the whole hub. Mine don't have too much more grease than that. Just a coating on everything, inner hub body, handle, clutch etc, but you don't need a lot of extra packed in there. Just so everything moves smoothly.

Good! So I guess the only thing left to do is and some wheeling.
