temp guage doesnt really move

so my temp guage doesnt really show and reading. Ive had this truck for 5 years now and it seemed like it worked so i left it alone..i was gone for over a year and now i want to check it out..the wife was driving it and from what she said it might of over heated. How do i check to see if the temp guage is working.
I thought about using a voltage meter and check that way...but where do i start..in the console its self or in the fuse box?

Thanks

The Factory Service Manual has a test procedure in the "Body Electrical" (BE) section.

To test your dash temp gauge, pull the wire off your temp sender and ground it. Turn the key on, and the gauge should go all the way over to "hot."

If the gauge is OK, then your engine is running too cold. Probable cause is a stuck open thermostat.

OK, I was about to post the same question but did the search first and found this. If the gauge is good with grounding the wire and it went to HOT could it be the sending unit? Checking the unit would be a check with ohm meter for resistance? My Cat is bad and tailpipe is black with rich smell so this could fix it. Thanks.

Yep, sender is a variable resistance device. I think the FSM lists some resistance vs. temperature values.

You pull the wire off the temp. sender, and ground the WIRE, not the sender. Then, turn the ignition key to "on" and watch the gauge. If the gauge is OK, it'll go over to "hot."

If the gauge checks out, then the sender that you pulled the wire off is bad, or the thermostat is likely stuck open.

Since you're getting a code for coolant temperature, the most likely problem is the thermostat.

I pulled the wire off, Grounded that Wire, turned the ign on and the gauge does not move at all, I did this while the truck was hot.
