Temp guage bouncing around?

1990 4runner v6. I am used to my oil pressure guage moving around a bit while driving - but not my temp guage. Whats going on here? It pretty much bounces around between low and mid until it warms up - then it was stay at half way usually until I come to a stop, then it will drop all the way down again. How do I fix this? I definitely don't want to chance anything being as I live in Phoenix and I definitely need to be sure of my engine temp!

Thank you!

This was happening in my wifes car. It was just a loose connection at the sensor. Find your water temperature sensor and check the wires to it. On the 3.0 it is at the back of the engine (near the fire wall) under all the heater hoses. Could be a bad sensor or just covered in build up but sine the needle is bouncing when the vehicle is moving i bet its just a bad connection. maybe a wire rubbed through.
