"tek tek tek" sound in the morning

Hi everyone, this is my first post on this forum please bear with me I am new to this site. I'd like to kindly ask your guys' opinions on this matter.

I have 89 first gen 4runner with 22re and 5 speed manual tranny. The engine has been recently rebuilt by toyota master tech shop in my town. New timing chain new water pump etc etc. These guys are very good they only fix toyotas and has been in business for years. A highly reputable shop I fully trust them.

The 22re had 182k miles and about 10k miles on rebuild.

Lately in the morning especially when I first started the truck I have been hearing a "tek tek tek" sounds coming from under the hood. To illustrate what it sounds like, imagine an oscillating fan that we usually put in the living room, when the fan is running you stick a plastic straw to the blade of the fan and that's what the "tek tek tek.." sounds like.

It usually happened for a brief period and then disappeared after I gave it a gas. Once the engine starts and gets warm the sound is gone by itself and I can turn off the engine and turn it back on it wouldn't do it anymore.

Did any of you guys have similar thing ever happened with your 4runner before? What might have caused this? A failing clutch fan? A faulty distributor? Remember the engine has been rebuilt so many new parts. The sound "tek tek tek" has the same rhythm as the sound of a turning engine thus I am pretty sure the part that's making that sound must be a moving part too. What do you think. Any info is much appreciated.

Kind regards to everyone here. Thanks.

Thats Piston Slap. Once the oil is warm its circulated through the block and quiets the pistons.

Anti-check valve in oil filter. The oiling passage in the 20 and 22r engine allow oil pressure to bleed off. Chang your oil filter to a anti-drainback style with a checkvalve and that should cure your problem.

Thanks for all the replies so far guys.

I have to mention that my 4runner never did this before no matter how cold the temp outside. And on top of that, I always use OEM toyota oil filter.

The "tek tek tek" sounds just happened since two days ago. Sometimes it was pretty loud. A kind of got me scared one time. Hmm..very strange. This never happened at all until now. I don't drive the runner everyday so sometimes she sits parked for days at a time. Anybody else has more thoughts or opinions on this? Thanks again.

i say try a different filter next oil change and see if it fixes your problem. thats a whole lot cheaper than trying to fix piston slap or rod knock

edit again. try a thicker oil that might help

If you let the engine idle, how long until the noise goes away?
If you blip the throttle right after starting, it goes away?

Anyhow, it could also be a very slightly leaking exhaust gasket that seals up after the manifold heats and expands a tad.

Mine does that too when I start it and it's cold, for the first 1/2 mile or so. Drives me nuts. My old motor never did that.
