Tape Deck doesnt work 88 4runner
Yes... I realize its a tape deck and 2012
But I don't want to put a new stereo in this thing, kinda like the fact that its all original. Ordered a couple old cassettes off ebay so I had something to listen to (the fact that I tend to like classic rock helps that), and put one in today.
The deck just keeps clicking and running the "tape loop" on the display, but never starts playing. It also wouldn't let me switch back to the radio, or eject the tape... had to jimmy the cassette back out to get back to the radio.
Common problem on these decks? I've got the Dolby "premium" one:
Any one else have this issue? I'm hesitant to put something newer in it because if I take the top off I feel like it will get stolen.

lol... being as its 24 years old, I'd be more surprised if it did work! How many kids in 24 years may have jammed a crayon in there, or penny etc...
I's just get a new deck personally...
But who knows... maybe someone else out there in yota world still listens to cassettes and knows how to fix it

Maybe you can see if you can retrofit an 8 track in there and get even more classic rock!
I can't help with the stereo much but maybe suggest a head cleaner (if they even still make those).
And is that button at the top left for the antenna or something? I don't recall seeing that button in any of my 3 1st gen 4runners.

I loved the old technology in my truck too although I don't think I've played a cassette in about 10 years. I bet if you find a stereo repair shop it can be fixed but it definately would be cheaper to replace. Sometimes it's heads out of allignment or dirty heads. To try and clean the heads: get denatured alcohol and some q tips. You need some hemostats or needle nose pliers to hold the q tip. Wet the q tip and wipe the heads in one direction only. Give it a few minutes to dry and try it. A lot of time this works.
You can get a new stereo with a detacable faceplate to discourage theft.
