Tachometer doesnt read at idle when cold?

Tachometer doesnt read at idle when cold?

Well, I know this is on a T100, but my '90 Regular cab used to do the same thing...so here goes.

In slightly chilly and lower weather (45 degree's and below) the tachometer will cut out at idle. As soon as you give it gas, it come's up to the correct idle, and all is fine. It's not that it's a problem, just a curiosity that's been confusing me for a while...

Anyone else delt with this issue?

possibly just an issue with the OEM tach in the dash

have you tried hooking an aftermarket tach up and seeing if it does the same thing? does it start working normally after things warm up a bit after driving?


my speedo use to make a bunch of noise and jump around like crazy when it was cold, but in warm weather it wouldn't do it. I started turning the lights on, even during the daylight, so that the instrument panel lights would come on, and the bulbs putting off heat would make the cluster warm up enough to make it stop

well back in my younger day's, i did have this:



Got it free and it was kinda cool, but in retro it was dumb as hell. anywho, i had that one hooked directly into the tach output on the side of the diag box on my '90, and the higher the rpms, the more seperation between the stock tach and the autometer. at 4000 rpm's on the autometer, the stock read 3800. so i'm not sure on the accuracy of the stock tach anyways.

as far as temperature goes, i honestly haven't tried turning the lights on. i was talking to my little bro (98_3RZ) and he was saying his '94 2wd 22RE reads funny and bounces around when it rains.

yeah I know all about the huge tach on the dash in the younger days when I was 19, I thought this was the coolest thing ever:









I ran it for about 6 months before I realized that all I had done was create a huge blind spot on the dash with the tach, and I kept hitting my head on the pillar gauges every time I got out of the truck, lol, so I ditched the entire setup and just installed an SR5 cluster






That's odd though, how your's is acting up like that. I'm not sure 100% how the OEM tach is wired up; if it goes through the ECM, and gets its RPM reading from there, or if it goes directly to the coil under the hood and bypasses the ECM completely. I DO know that a lot of people that do the SR5 cluster swap to get the tach, have to wire up the tach themselves. I'm pretty sure they just go from a pin on the back of the cluster, and go directly to the coil, but I don't know the specifics of how it's wired; I've never done it personally. Why do I tell you this? Well maybe the connection is bad somewhere between the coil and the tach, and running a new wire might solve the bad connection if that's the problem.

Short of a bad connection, the only thing I can think of is a faulty tach.

wow, i thought i was the only person crazy enough to put a monster in my yota! glad to see im not alone!

i was thinking about what you said about the temperature last night on my way home, so this morning, i waited for it to happen. but just like it normal, when i waited for it to happen, it didnt...

like i said in the original post, im not all that worried about it. just one of those weird quirks i've always delt with...

btw, i really like the pillar guages
