t100/tundra rear end weaker than v6?
I got my blazeland kit installed and it's great, so I called up jim's in Denver looking for a t100/tundra rear and I talked to a guy there (not Jim) for ten minutes or so. he said I should stick with my 88 v6 rear end because it's supposedly stronger than the wider axle. he said that with the t100 axle, he and his crawlin buddies have broken axles and cracked housings etc, while the older v6 unit has proven way more reliable. esp with fror full float kit. anyone have some thoughts on this?

There's no such thing as a "V6" rear end/axle. There's a V6/Turbo 8" differential. But the rest of the rear axle is the same as a 84-95 4 cyl. Just to clear that up.
I've never heard of this supposed weakness you're speaking of. But late model trucks aren't my forte. I'm split 50/50 on my thoughts about it. 50% it's probably true, 50% it's most likely BS. I highly doubt the T100/Tundra diff is weaker than the V6/Turbo diff. If you full float the 84-95 rear axle, it's not really comparable to a standard 84-95 or a T100/Tundra rear axle any more. Of course it would be more reliable. That's the nature of full floating axles.

T-100 uses a different design third member and larger R&P. I have heard it is weaker, but mostly what I hear is there are fewer options for lockers and gears. I personally like the factory E-locker and that is for am 8" third member.
What you are wanting is a wider rear axle to match the front. Don't quote me on this but do some research to confirm. I believe 4x4s 1985 and earlier use a rear axle width of 57" WMS. 1986-pre Tacoma 59.5" Tacoma 1st Gen 62.5" Tacoma 2nd Gen 65.5 As for T-100 it is 65.5" and the Tundra is 68" With a Blazeland LA the front width is +7" track width at around 65.5 So, you are wanting the 2nd Gen Tacoma width with a factory E-locker. As for locating the axle you may have to relocate spring perches and e-brake mechanism.
Again, I am just posting this off Memory and you are someone else should research this and post a confirmation or correction.

i know, i know. i've looked at that page a hundred times, but it doesn't really answer my question. erik says the t100 diff is stronger. this guy's giving me anecdotal evidence that something in that axle assembly is weaker than the earlier 8" diff/axle assembly. i was just looking for someone with lots of experience with both to confirm/debunk this testimony.
anyway, unless someone up and gives me a t100 axle for free, i'll prolly stick with what i got. slap a locker, some disks, some spacers, and chevy 63's on it and call it good.

if you can't get aftermarket parts for it easily, like chromoly axles(must have), you probably aren't going to want it anyway.
for example, the axles that marlin sells apparently don't fit t100/tundra rear ends: https://www.marlincrawler.com/axle/r...oly-rear-axles
tg axles don't either?? http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/off-r...ear-axles.html
i'm sure that you can get the t100/tundra stuff somewhere, but i'd price it all out ahead of time.
