T-Chain Slap..
Can anyone tell me what the timing chain slap sounds like? My valves are adjusted properly, but it seems as if I'm still getting some valve noise, not really a sharp tick, but kinda a "slap", not really though, it seems pretty normal, but the valves are loud on startup for 2-3 seconds, and it ticks like this under heavy acceleration at about 2-3K RPM seems to go away after engine warms up a bit, or maybe its just me, what I'm asking is how loud is the timing chain slap? I just did a headgasket..

I mistaked mine for valve noise

Like its not very loud though, and it doesnt do it any other time but around those RPM's, and when I did the headgasket the guides were still there, I'm about to install a 5.29 front differential so I'm going to replace the oil pan gasket while I'm under there, I figured I mise well and I'll see if theres anything in the pan.

hey--don't want to worry or send you down the wrong path, but--
did you consider wrist pin knock? or lower?--
just a thought as that is not uncommon for the v6 with a bit of wear and tear--
have you changed oil recently and changed brand or additive?

Changed oil about two weeks ago, running 10-W40 Napa Brand High Milage oil and a Motorcraft oversize filter.. Works great.. Never had this problem before, not wrist pin slap, its definatly top end.

but really if your lash is good no timing chain guide material verified no wear on the timing chain cover, whats left but bottom end?

Im pretty sure hes reffering to his 22re as v6s have belts not chains.

When the chain guides on my 91 went, it sounded like a fairly fast (faster than a loose valve at idle) repetitive metallic rapping or clicking (almost like the old playing card in the bicycle spokes sound) that lasted a second or so every now and then- came and went during constant rpm's and if we blipped the throttle, it rattled while the rpm's came back down to idle.

That tick you hear at startup is the timing chain. Oil pressure is what gives it tension so it takes a second. If you are hearing that sound at different RPMs then your tensioner is fried. It sounds like a valve tick but it is not. Pushrod valve tick is what is sounds like not OHV valve tick which can be mistaken for injector noise. OHV do not make a loud tick even when they are way out of adjustment.

A push rod rocker tick sounds like a timing chain tick on a 22re. Kind of echos through the whole engine. But a rocker tick on a 22re sounds more like a loud injector tick since it is rhythmic and the sounds is easy to pinpoint.
Maybe this is just my perception.

A push rod rocker tick sounds like a timing chain tick on a 22re. Kind of echos through the whole engine. But a rocker tick on a 22re sounds more like a loud injector tick since it is rhythmic and the sounds is easy to pinpoint.

The difference between the timing chain and a valve tick, which is similar to a small exhaust leak at one port as well, is the 'frequency' of the tick. valves, pushrods even, make one usually well-defined 'tick' every other engine revolution, since they are both manifestations of the same thing- slack in the valve train (though some pushrods can make more odd noises when they become coked up and oil no longer can travel through it).
What I was trying to get at in my description of the timing chain noise could be considered a 'fluttering' or 'rattling' type of noise, higher-pitched, metal-on-metal contact, but not as sharply defined as a loose valve, nor as rhythmic- more tapslaptapslaptapslap, than tap, tap, tap, tap, tap (correlating to engine rpms).
Get my meaning?

I didn't read all the posts but have you checked to see if the chain is rubbing agains the guide mounting bolts? Usually the timing will rub against the timing chain cover when the guide breaks or wears too much. I switched the timing chain set with metal guides on mine & for some reason the chain slaps against the guide mounting bolts now. Go figure.
