T-Case issues
So i searched high and low (dont want the wrath of the Scuba), and i cannot find any posts relating to the issue my little brother is having on his 87 pick up. We went wheeling yesterday (will post up pics later) the first hill up to the first mine, his 4 low engaged properly, climbed up the hill with no issues. Get the trucks down, continue on to the next mine, he goes to put her in 4 wheel drive, it pulls back to 4hi, but is still in 2hi, and now stuck in 2hi, but with the shift lever in 4hi position. I cannot get the shift lever to budge, i have tried every combo, hubs locked, hubs unlocked, rolling forward, rolling backwards. I'm waiting on him to get here now. here is the stats on his truck:

Hmmmm, have you verified that the front drive shaft is spinning? Off the cuff, if the lever is in 4hi but you think it's still in 2hi the interlock pin on the shift rails has broke or maybe the fork?

nope, no spin. Here is something else too, the u-joint protector thing, the big donut where the front driveshaft comes out of the t-case, well i think the whole engine/trans/t-case did some bouncing around, cause it snapped off and was hanging from the front driveshaft.

so with the shift lever stuck in 4hi the front shaft doesn't spin? Sounds like it's in 4hi. When you say "rolling" are you actually in reverse driving backwards? As far as the shield goes, I don't know how he broke it, that things is pretty beefy. I'd make sure it didn't fall off! Also, did you check the fluid level?

thats the thing, you could eat off his t-case, not one leak. The truckused to belong to a guy named Perry, races the team 738 7S yota (the one for sale on craigslist) the guy built the truck as his dd for the winter snow up in big bear. The engine and trans were rebuilt about 1500-200 miles ago. I will check the fluid though. im just waiting on him to get the damn truck over here, we had a big bbq after wheeling yesterday so he got pretty toasted. Well, i guess i will go fix the things i broke on my truck before he gets here, i will let you know if we have any issues, thanks for the help, greatly appreciated.

I convinced to let me look at it and see what i can do. I started by pulling the Shifter out, and what do ya know, its rusted and had jumped out of the shift rods. I took the shifter assembly apart and went to town on it with 3M stripping disks, had him do quite a bit of work on it while i took care of the rust on the tips of the shift rods. Lubed it up with high temp grease, popped her back in and wow! it shifts 100X better than before. here is a couple pics of what we found, he had to run so i didnt have time to take re-assembly pics. He is just starting to learn automotive maintenance, been in tree cutting and construction, but never done cars, so i told him he needed to make that so clean he could stir his coffee with it, he said okay and got it nice and shiny, Its hard to have patience, but he is loving the whole DIY scene.

work sucks. they are pretty bad on the rust side, but no pitting, on the other hand, i have no idea how the hell it could have popped out of its pattern, it just doesnt look like it was possible.

Here we go again. So, yesterday we put an easy 200 bucks in parts into her (major tune up and some gaskets- all engine) Now, at about 40 mph it makes an interesting noise, if he is cruising or lets off the gas completely, its quiet, but if he pushes down on the accelerator, it lets out this insanely loud screech/whistling/howling noise. I checked the u-joints, all good. It makes no noise what so ever when driving around town up to 40. it shifts smooth, t-case shifts smooth, acceleration is solid, clutch is firm, clutch fuid is clean and full. Im not quite sure what to make of this. Well, its off to work for me, i will check back on my lunch, see if anyone has any ideas or suggestions.

Where's the noise sound like it's coming from? Drivetrain? Maybe the u-joints just need grease, but are still tight enough? Seems a lil funny that it would start right after a serious tune-up though...

i know, its wird, im going out to double check the rear diff, i think thats where its originating from, i will throw up a pic of the tires before i head out, give me a sec.
