Both motors ran in their own bodies, the 92 was knocking of course that's why the switch. I stripped the 88 down to the basic the block and put all of the components from the 92 onto it, including the intake manifold. The 88 engine had previous repairs done to it before it was rolled and sounded really good, no trouble starting idling etc. The 88 also had a new clutch so kept them all together, motor tranny transfer. (Was considering just trying to fix the 88 body, but then stumbled onto the 92 for cheap.) I also replaced plugs, .032 correct??? Did not touch the timing as it had been replaced about 2 years before being rolled. Both vehicles have sat for awhile, replaced with fresh fuel and filter.
It runs really rough until I rev it to 2500 rpms but otherwise coughs spits and sputters and about refuses to idle. I have found plenty of threads converting 22r to re v6 etc. but this is the same block engine so should have been no trouble or so I thought....Any thoughts meanwhile I will continue searching here and thanks for any help!!

since the '88 was running fine before the swap, it shouldn't be a long block issue... it sounds like you did use the '92 injectors, i think that some '88s had one-year-only injector setup??

i'd be looking for vaccum leaks and such at this point.

we don't know how the '92 was running, with the knock...

Yeah that's what I figure. Chase the bugs around for a day or 2 got it running better the more I tinker.
92 started right up and ran quiet until it warmed up a minute and then would start to knock. That has brand new head, will rebuild it later on.

Its not that the 88 injectors were a one of....it's that Toyota changed from low impedance injectors with a resistor in the firing circuit to high impedance injectors without the resistor in August of 88. If your 88 was built after August 88 your 88 has the same injectors as the 92. If the 88 was built prior to August the injectors are different and you have to use the 92 injectors. Like osv above I'm assuming the intake swap included the 92 injectors?
In addition to the vacuum leak checks, I'd verify the vacuum line routing..they are pretty easy to mix up.

Yes I checked into that, sept of 87 was the manu date so I switched out everything that I could off the 88 block and replaced with the 92's. That is what I was most concerned about is the difference and thought the block's the same why can't I just strip it down and change over? and dove into it.
I appreciate all your tips and thought guys. The motor surges when the brake pedal is depressed any thoughts??? No, I am not that girlie or blonde.......ha ha
