Hello all I'm new here, I just recently bought a 93 4 runner with a bad motor, I have also owned a 90 4 runner and a 92 Camry XLE... My Husband and I are trying to get the motor out of my 4 runner to but the newly refurbished motor in a 1993 4 Runner with the 3.0 V-6 and automatic tranny. We are trying to get the "bad" engine out so we can get the "new" motor in. We have all the tranny bolts out, motor mounts are disconnected, all the hoses and wires are disconnected. But something is definitely still holding it in. The starter is still in. We took out the 2 bolts from the back, but there looks to be another bolt coming in from the front that might still be holding the starter in. Will the starter prevent the motor from coming out? Also, people keep talking about a "flex plate". Is the flex plate located inside the bell housing? If so, how do you unbolt it? Through the hole that would be created by removing the starter? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am not used to Toyota!! Thanks in advance...

Remove that 3rd bolt holding the starter in place, the engine should separate from the transmission then, although sometimes it still requires some 'persuasion' - good luck.

As stated, remove the starter. The flex plate is bolted to the crankshaft, inside the bellhousing. You won't be able to remove it with the engine still in the truck.

Thanks for the reply's.. We finally got the motor out!!!! We are now in the process of trying to get everything off the old motor and put on the new motor.. Am sure we will have more questions when we go to put the new motor in.. LOL

Does anyone know if we need to put permatex on the thermostat gaskets and exhaust gaskets?? Please let me know we are trying to get the refurbished motor ready to put in my 4 runner!!! Also how do you get the fan clutch off?????

Technically, no. I wouldn't use any on the thermostat gasket. As far as the exhaust gaskets, it's not necessary but you could use some if you think they might need it. All my exhaust flanges are very worn, so I do use the ultra copper in addition to the seals for those. Except for the exhaust manifold gaskets. I don't think it would help much(or last very long)there.

The fan clutch has 4 12mm nuts holding it to the fan bracket/pulley. Just remove those, you'll need a 12mm wrench because a socket won't fit, and it will come right off. It's easier to remove the fan from it first. Just 4 10mm nuts holding it on there.

We have the bolts off, but the clutch fan doesn't want to budge.. Any suggestions?

This may have already been said but do you have the belts off? I always had trouble getting to one of the bolts so make sure all the bolts are out with the belt off and it should basically fall right off. If you're still having access issues, remove the radiator and that will give you a lot more room.

Yes all the belts are off.. And the radiator was taken out before we took out the old motor. But we need the pulley and fan clutch off the old motor to put on the "new" motor.. All bolt are removed from the pulley and fan clutch but they don't want to budge!!!

Well, without seeing any pictures I'm not sure what is still holding it on but if it's frozen on, the next step will be to use a hammer to bang it loose. But you'll want to be careful to not bend the pulley so if you can wedge a piece of wood down there to deaden the blow unless you have a deadblow hammer or maybe a rubber mallet.
