Suspension work- best place to get parts and recommendations

I have some suspension work to do and had some basic questions. This is an 87 4runner sr5. Where is the best place to get replacement parts? I can't seem to find any online dealers or places with catalogues so I can find part numbers and stuff. Should I stay away from the generic ebay stuff like this:

25 year old parts typically have been discontinued at the dealer anyway.

It depends on what you are going to do with your rig?hard off road or daily driver.Im not sure how long it would last off road.I havent had any probs with cheap ebay stuff yet.I replaced every front end part on my ranger ball joints upper and lower, inner and outer tie rods and have put 30,000 miles on them no problems yet.but for the price $115 shipped i couldnt beat it.autozone wanted 69 a piece just for the upper control arms like oem with ball joints welded in.It would have cost me about $320 for all of it at autozone. And all of it from ebay was built the exact same as oem.I wish I could remember who i bought it from so you could buy from him.

It is only a light offroad vehicle mainly utility daily driving. That auction I had listed was $100 shipped for basically the whole front suspension parts. The metal will be fine it's just the quality of the ball joints basically.

Suprisingly, I bought a lot of small stuff from a local dealer near me for my 88 but that was probably almost two years ago. I bet you can still get these parts at the dealer but it would be cheaper elsewhere. I'm not knocking Tim for using those parts, but personally I wouldn't because there is no way those parts are OEM quality being that cheap. This is an instance of "you get what you pay for..." Especially when the front end parts, notably the tie rod ends, keep the tires going straight and where you want them to. No way is the quality of those cheap Ebay ball joints the same as a set of Moog Problem Solver's. Check out rockauto.com. But it's your money dude. They are just Chinese knock offs on Ebay.

So if I were to get all the parts individually is there an online catalogue with pics and part numbers? For example for bmw you can get all oe part diagrams and numbers at realoem.com Is there something like that for toyota trucks?

The parts for our rigs probably won't be sitting on the shelf at the dealership or parts store...they have to make room for all the parts for the newer vehicles. But they are still readily available from many sources. I went snooping around yesterday to try and find part numbers for your 87 4Runner. I also called the local dealership and asked for part numbers. Here's a list of online suppliers that I always check prices with whenever I go to order something:

toyotapartszone.com
toyotapart.com
toyotapartscheap.com
oemparts123.com
villagetoyotaparts.com
toyotapartsdiscounters.com
usatoyotaparts.com
dealerdirectparts.com

All sell genuine Toyota parts and they're usually pretty close to each other with the prices. I usually end up getting the best deal from oemparts123.com once shipping is factored in. I don't even try to get parts from the local dealership anymore because the prices are usually at least 50% higher.

So here's the list of part numbers I found for you yesterday. All but one have more than one part number. I have no idea why, but all the numbers work, I've already checked.

Pitman Arm: 45401-35220 or 45401-35150
Idler Arm: 45490-39355 or 45490-35140
Upper Ball Joints: 43350-39075 or 43360-39075 or 43350-39045
Lower Ball Joints: 43340-39175 or 43330-39165 or 43330-39195
Tie Rod Ends:
Right Outer: 45046-35H01 or 45046-39385
Left Outer: 45047-35H01 or 45046-39385
Right Inner: 45406-39155
Left Inner: 45406-39185 or 45406-39155

You'll have to confirm exactly what you need, but at least it's a start. All of these numbers came directly from the dealership so they should be right for your Runner.

As far as the other stuff you found on Ebay, I'd leave it where it is. The Toyota parts have proven reliability so while you pay more for them, you know they'll work right. If you average out the price for the Ebay parts you found, you're only paying $10/part. It's a hell of a deal, but I believe you get what you pay for. If you can swing it, get the parts you know will work and don't worry about it again. It's you're truck so of course you can do whatever you want with it.

If you ever need part numbers always call the dealership and tell them what you need. Even if you don't buy from them, they still have the right part numbers for these old rigs. And if you don't go with Toyota parts and want something aftermarket, it's a good idea to keep a list of the OEM part numbers so you can cross-reference (Moog makes stuff too). I hope this helps!

Awesome, thanks for putting in all that effort for me. It will definitely be used as I plan on replacing most everything. I'll try to report back with any pics and info, thanks.

OK so I've been accumulating all the parts and just about ready to get started. I'm going to do it in phases so first I'm going to do the suspension and brakes. For brakes I have new BMC, new front rotors and pads and rebuild kit, new lines, new rear cylinders and shoes. Engine and tranny mounts. All 8 front suspension arms/ball joints, upper and lower front energy bushings and rear leaf bushings. While everything is off gonna check front hubs and wheel bearings. Is there any thing else that I can do "while I'm in there" kind of work? I'm pretty sure I got it all but I like to be comprehensive so any suggestions will help.

I'm changing out the pretty much the same stuff as Nuyota on my 95 4Runner and I'm planning on using OEM parts, but I've never ordered OEM myself before. I'm looking at Toyotapartszone and I'm in a little over my head on exactly what I need. If you order a part, let's say a lower ball joint, do you get everything needed to replace it like the castle nut, cotter pin, bolts, etc or do you have to specifically order them as well?

Big update. Instead of using OEM or Moog parts I cheaped out and got the crappy ebay stuff. It was all 12 parts on sale for $100. Yeah I should have known $100 for about $600 worth of quality parts didn't make sense but it looked alright. Was going thru a dip a few days ago and one of the ball joints blew. So now gotta swap everything out for the right stuff. Lesson learned...DON'T BUY THE CHEAP EBAY CRAP.

Edit...I may have spoken too soon. Started inspecting things and looks like it might have been my torsion bar that popped. The ball joint is still good.
