Read some great posts on here about the benefits of swapping the stock AFM on my 87 22RE for the Supra unit. Couldn't find an 82 BUT I got a good deal on an 84: here is what I found-
Although the plug is the same it caused my check engine light to stay on and my truck to run like DIRT! after doing some probing with a meter (resistance) I discovered that the 84 has different resistances across the pins SO, being an auto tech type I preceded to unsolder 3 connectors and swap boards. I am pleased to report IT WORKED!!!! I'll try to get some pics up.

You have to have a 82 to plug and play otherwise you need to find a nonturbo Supra AFM and install the 22re electronic board and I believe I built mine from a 87 Supra looks the same housing but the supra has the air cleaner end larger and rounder.

Mid 80`s Cressida AFM also works, thats what i have on my 86 4Runner, and it was plug and play. The part number for the larger AFM is 22250-43110

The one I bought is a 22250-35020 and the I had read some discussion on another thread saying they thought it might work but it sure doesnt!
Since installing mine I've noticed a bit more bottom end (no kick down when climbing hills on highway) and the mileage is about the same. It LOOKS alot neater and seems to have affected timing somehow because now I have a bit of pre-ignition "ping". I'll play with it tomorrow.

anyone know of a write up on how to swap the boards over or how to tune them after you swap them?

The board swap is pretty straight forward, just unsolder and resolder some connections. Not sure about the adjustment issue but I seem to recall one of the Supra AFM or battery swap threads had it in there.

Does anyone know what the running price for a 1982 Supra AFM today? I finally found one, but the guy is asking $150 for it.

I guess I might have to bite the bullet and get it since I havent seen one for sale in over a year of looking now. (well one that i was able to contact fast enough before someone else bought it).

Check some of the online used parts aggregator sites.

I have seen them as cheap as $65, so $65-$100 should be right. $150 iis pretty steep IMO.

super old thread I know but is the supra motor afm for a 6cyl but works for the 22re? I cant find that thing for less then 250 bucks. inflation is a bummer i guess

Does any one really know how much a benefit this gives .

I can`t see it being anymore then a keep up with the neighbors thing like the cone filters

well I know that better airflow helps add to other upgerades. Ill be running a rv cam bigger valves and a better spray pattern out of the injectors as well as a larger exhaust. I do not believe just the larger bore afm will do much but it will help out with other upgrades. I know that every little bit helps when you are working with limited hp on a 4 cyl. So I think it is worth a try to free up teh money i have already spent.

Little more sponky. But like stated it makes more of a difference with other air flow mods.

My next is to go to a later upper plenum and TB. I have a supra TB that can be adapted, has a larger bore, loads cheaper than an LC engineering plunge bored TB. But kinda stopped process when I went to Germany. Plus gonna do battery/intake swap eventually.

I had a supra afm and a tri-y header with 2 1/4" exhaust on mine. I am getting ready to sell it so I pulled the afm off and noticed a big difference. Maybe not massive HP but very noticeable especially on hill starts. I then pulled the header off and went back to stock collection tubes with 2 1/4" cat back exhaust again. Notice very little difference with out the header. I think I will try and slap the afm back on to see what it does with just that.

Disclaimer. I have a set of flame thrower injectors in it as well.

^^^ With a stock head, I couldn't tell any difference as well using a header. With a performance head I have seen a big difference. In my opinion, the headers are not worth the cost unless doing more upgrades.

Just incase someone else interested in the Supra AFM, https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f128...d-swap-248705/ I have not tried it but it is a possible option. Took me a while to find this thread about non Supra AFM.
