I have a 1995 Toyota 4runner SR5 4WD. I live in Atlanta so I mainly use 2wd. Recently I put it in 4wd and then made a sharp turning loop at about 4-7mph. The 4runner started stuttering like the brakes were pumping in and out. On another try my tires started spinning out. This doesn't happen in 2wd. Any ideas as to what this is? I thought it could be this:

Never ever use 4wd on dry pavement, that is what happens. Keep it up and you do some costly damage. By the way, welcome to Yotatech.

I ditto that. The reason for this is that your truck uses what is called a part-time 4wd system which is meant to be used on roads at least as loose as dirt. The system doesn't include a center differential and therefore, when you turn, each tire spins a different amount of turns causing a huge bind and possible breakage on your components.

Most of the time though, if you just make the mistake on pavement, it'll bounce around and squeak tires etc. Just don't do it again and you'll be fine.

you could drive it in 4wd in the rain but you will prolly have better control and less likely to spin out in a turn in 2wd. Ice and snow I would put it in
4wd. I assume you are not running locked diffs?

Dont even drive with it in the rain either, unless its a giant flood outside onthe road I wouldnt dare.

You can cause severe damage to the 4wd system if you use it on dry/semi wet pavement. Only when you feel you need traction should it be used, I only use it on dirt/loose roads, snow and or ice and offroad. If your slippingin heavy rain you need better tires, put them on the back too if you only replace one set!

I would get familiar with the working of a differential to better understand lockers, but the basic concept is that it locks the two wheels at that axle together making them spin at the same speed providing better traction.
