This is a little weird...So i was replacing the fuel filter w/ the access panel off and found this:



what is it?

I just thought id ask because i worried it might be a plugged hole!

It looks like a washer glued on there but... why?

Is it anywhere near the timing chain? Could the TC have worn a hole there!

Not suppose to be a hole there. Timing chain eats through the timing cover, not the head. Pull it off and see what happens.

I'd like to pull it off but if it's plugging a hole then it'll be a PITA.

Is the water jacket back there for the head or what?

Maybe one of those things that machine shops put into heads to tell if youve gotten the head too hot or not?

Hmmmm, then its had head work - maybe? It's only got 90K on it though...

That is an aftermarket head on there. That is the hole for the fuel pump drive gear (runs off the cam shaft drive gear) for a 22r based engine. On 22RE's, the thing is blocked off, just like that one...although the there is a plate and not a washer bolt thing.

Don't do anything with it, leave it alone. It's suppose to be blocked off...assuming you have a 22re

I've seen aftermarket heads have a very similar tag on it with specs, and/or brand. I can see some lettering on it, get in there and see what it says!

The fuel pump hole is much larger then that. Its also higher up on the head.

well i cant fit in there but my camera can! I used macro mode w/ a flash...

it says: "guarantee void if removed"

So is it a aftermarket head? Or was there some head work? I wonder if the TC is new? There is only 90K on the odometer

i did see the fuel pump hole up higher above it. The FP hole is blocked off w/ a plate.

Well in that case don't worry about it.

If you don't have a receipt for whatever work was done or even know about it, I suppose it really doesn't matter.

Can't really void it if you don't know who put it there.

Hmmm, I just recently found the EGR valve that was left disconnected. When the head was replaced/fixed they must have forgot it?

I just bought the truck a few weeks ago...

So is it likely an aftermarket head? Do stock 22re heads have a fuel pump hole w/ blocking plate or just aftermarket ones?

Why was it fixed/replaced???

I reconnected the EGR valve and it runs better...

come to think of it i bet that is why it had a bad exhaust flange gasket. i fixed that too! It looked like someone just used the old one and smashed it together out of alignment.

I wonder what else needs attention?

I don't know about it being an aftermarket head. All of them have the hole for the mechanical fuel pump.

Its always fun fixing the stuff the PO did to the truck before you got it.

could be aftermarket, maybe just had some head work done that might have had a warranty on it. I'm not sure the context in which I've seen that tag...

I do see the plate for the fuel pump above the washer thing now. Yea, it must be a thing to see how hot the head gets for warrenty work.

That item is basically a fuse.
It is made from a material that will melt at a specific temperature.
If it melts off the motor at any time during a warranty period, the warranty will be voided because the motor has been cooked hotter than normal running temperature.

That is a thing the head manufacturer uses for warranties against overheating. It will melt off at a certain temperature. Meaning they can tell when you overheated it... So they don't have to fight you on the warranty. It is obvious with only one person to blame.

Looks like it is an aftermarket head. And it being on there is a good sign.
