Stock fan Shroud is too big & won't fit on eithe radiator??? 1988 4runner 22RE
Searched and searched everywhere, even looking at Google images to try and find a difference. I have a 1988 4runner with a brand-spankin-new 22re I am almost ready to start for the first time, but...
Just about everything was wrong in the engine bay, but I replaced it all. What looked to be the correct radiator was falling apart, and the fan shroud did not fit. It was hacked up on the bottom to fit the bottom connections. Of course it was missing the lower plastic piece.
So I got a new 3 core , heavy duty radiator from www.radiatorbarn.com so far so good. Fan shroud still won't fit. In fact its worse because it won't sit flush with the body of the radiator as the top end cap (smooth part with the radiator cap on it) is thicker than the part with the cooling fins. The shroud is still too tall and extends past the fins into lower end cap area where the water fitting and drain pipe is.
So I figure it is the wrong shroud. Maybe aftermarket, or maybe from a different year, or possibly 2wd vs 4wd? So I figure if I ordered a new fan shroud from the dealer it would have to fit, right? $70 later, it is the same as the one I have that doesn't fit.
I have two radiators and one type of fan shroud, yet the shroud doesn't fit either. The shroud is correct for the vehicle. So do I have two radiators that don't fit? Is there another fan shroud option? I will post some pics later today. Any pics you guys might have would be very helpful.
Thanks and sorry this got so wordy...

Possibly, but both of them? Both are too short. And I would think the 3.0 would be at least as tall as the 22re version, because smaller wouldn't cool as well. Of course I could be wrong. Yup, I just went to radiator barn and the V6 Radiator is 17 3/4, so 2-inches taller. But it's shroud is totally different, so it's not as though I got a V6 shroud.
http://www.radiatorbarn.com/search.php?product=radiator Link doesn't work like I thought. You will have to select 1988, Four Runner, 2.4L, and that will get you to my radiator options.
I got Option 4. Option 2 is for an automatic the only one that is 1-inch taller (if those dimensions ar HXWXD). Could I have an automatic fanshroud?

Here is the old radiator with the old shroud. The bolt holes are lined up perfectly. I trimmed it a little more to fit around the new radiator, so I guess it is even shorter, although both measure 15 3/4 core height.

Any pics that anyone has of their fan shroud would be totaly helpful. Right now I am e-mailing Radiatorbarn.com back and forth. Don't know if they can solve my problem, but they are being very helpful!
Next I am off to the junkyard to see what I can see...

I lucked out today at my favorite Toyota junk yard. I found my existing fan shroud first. Then, under a pile of junk in the bed of a Yota I saw the corner of another shroud. Luckily it was the shorter version of the 22RE fan shroud for 1984 to 1988/89 trucks/4runner.
The owner of http://www.toyotasalvage.com/ was super helpful and said he has only had this problem like 3 times in the past 10 years and then brought out a new, aftermarket fan shroud that fit my application for only $30--sold!
Here are the Toyota part numbers (aftermarket version are available):
16711-35020 Shorty.
**711-35030 (most likely 16711-35030) Longer.
Oddly enough the new, shorty shroud I have is listed as NOT fitting my truck. Hope this will help someone out there in the future.

Sorry for the confusion...
I have been rebuilding the 22re in my 1988 4runner for some time now. At this point it was time to attend to the radiator/fanshroud. The radiator was trashed and the fan shroud had been hacked up to fit it (see pics above).
My 4runner had all kinds of miss-matched parts so I had either A) the wrong radiator which was too short or B) the wrong fan shroud which was too long.
So I ordered a new radiator from www.radiatorbarn.com. Model 2314 for my sepcific application. It's core hieght was around 15 3/4-inchs tall just like the messed up radiator that came in my 4runner. Therefore the shroud that came with my 4runner would not fit my new radiator.
With this I went to Toyota to order the correct fan shroud for my 4runner. When I got it I knew it was identical to what came with my 4runner and it would not fit either.
No one could help so I went to a Toyota junk yard to see if I could find the two different fan shrouds to compare and I got lucky and found both of them.
Fact is, there are two different fan shrouds for 1984 to 1988/89 pickup/4runner. One is around 1 1/2 inches shorter than the other and there is no logical way to figure out what years/models got one or the other--not that I can fiind anyway.
So if you have a 22r or 22re or maybe 22rte and a shorter radiator (15 3/4 core height) get the shorter fan shroud Toyota part number 16711-35020. If you have a taller radiator get the Toyota part number 16711-35030. Or, just go electric!
The V6 fan shroud is totally different and does not apply.
Hope this helps.

according to my catalog, 16711-35020 shows:
8601-8903 22R, RN58,RN67 manual trans
8808-9501 22RE RN8*,RN90,RN10*,RN110, manual trans
but 16711-35030 shows:
8601-8903 22R* RN5*,RN61 manual trans
8808-9501 22RE RN8*,RN90, auto trans, towing package
there are at least half a dozen different shrouds/fan setups in these trucks
hope that helps make sense of things on your end also... looks like a serious clustermess of mismatched parts in your truck by some vatoloco!
