steering wheel removal and replacement with aftermarket

any write-up for how to remove the steering wheel in a Gen2 4 runner (SR5 if it matters)

I want to replace it with an aftermarket.. not concerned about retaining the cruise control buttons, I may rewire them elsewhere, or just remove them..

pictures would be helpful as well.

thanks.

depending on the wheel maker you go with, you will need the adapter that they use. some are 3 hole, some are 5, and so on.
to remove the stock one. first you take the horn pad off by removing the 2 screws in the back of the wheel and then unplug the wire. it can shock you so be careful. then you loosen the big nut in the middle of the wheel (dont remove it all the way yet) then you can either rent/buy the puller to make it easy to do the job or, if you want to try it manually first... in a north south east west pattern hit, pull, and wiggle the wheel until the taper pops off. this is why you leave the nut on, so when you're pulling, it doesnt fly off the splined shaft and hit you in the face.

Just get the tool. You're not doing the spline any good by wiggling it. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...0651/N2417.oap DO put a mark on the wheel and the shaft to line them up; you'll be really tanked if you drive away and the steering wheel is cocked to one side.

Does any second gen have air bags? If yours does, remember that one going off in your face CAN kill you.

was looking more for pictures of 2nd gens that had an aftermarket wheel.

as for the puller, I own one. not my first rodeo.. I'm an ASE certified tech, worked for Chrysler for 15+ years.

as for the airbag, yeah the battery would get disco'd before I even attempted to remove the steering wheel, but mine doesn't have an airbag.
