Just what direction is the play in??

Do you have a tilt column ??

Depends in just what area things move.

Have the bolts holding it in place come loose ??

Did the latch holding the tilt break??

The area in the floor/firewall has rusted so bad it just moves all round .

Pretty hard to figure when you say the steering column has play.
