Starter Trying to Engage without key......
Hello out there, you all have helped me via the search button many a times before but I have a question I can't find an answer to and I'm trying to avoid throwing parts at the truck.
94 22re pickup. Dead battery. Put a new battery, no key in ignition, make the cable connection and get a "click clack shake," it startled me pretty good.
Disconnected ignition hoping it was that. Still happens.
Seems the solenoid is stuck engaged, is there anything else to check before laying on the ice and snow and trying to remove that mother? It sure looks pretty hidden in there.
Could a bad relay have anything to do with it? Anything else to test before condemning the solenoid and digging it out?
Thanks

Either the relay or solenoid if the contacts are welded closed will engage the starter when the battery is hooked up.
what is happening is the ignition switch is being bypassed.
It could also be the electrical part of the ignition switch is stuck in the start position.
I have never had this happen but in theory it might be possible but I would think contacts first.

I recommend just taking a push start button and tapping it into your ignition (black and yellow) wire and then remove the wire on your starter that has the nut on it and replace it with a wire running to your push button that way your key still uses its function for turning it off and you have to have a keyin the ignition in the on position for the push start to even work plus you can hide it.cool push start and a security upgrade double whammy. if not you can always chase that's smaller wire on your starter with the nut on it find where it is shorted. the push start button is only 10 bucks at autozone

If the solenoid is stuck open would that sill be an issue once a push button start is installed?
If the ignition switch is disconnected and this still happens is it possible that the relay(or something else) is to blame or is my solenoid the issue for sure?
Thanks

If the solenoid is stuck open it does not work
If the solenoid is stuck closed contacts fused to the plunger.
As soon as the Battery is connected it will start to crank
A push button does nothing but add to the mess.
As long as power is applied it will continue to crank .
If by chance the engine starts either the starter drive will break or things will jam .
Pull the starter fix this one or get a decent exchange rebuilt.
Who knows what brand starter might be in there now.
