Starter throw problems
1990 Toyota Truck 22re 4x4 man 5sp. 130,000 mi. I just purchased this truck thinking it only had a bad starter or worn flywheel. Seems that it has a new starter that works perfectly and the flywheel is fine? I measured the throw that the starter needs to make contact with the flywheel and it seems to be falling about 1/4 inch short? I bench tested the starter as well and worked flawlessly. The guy I purchased it from just put a new clutch kit, flywheel and starter. Could he have accidentally put the wrong flywheel in it? Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated. YES, I am a newbie with Toyotas....

I should say that when I crank the motor over the starter only makes contact with 1/8-1/16 of the flywheel. For some reason, the flywheel is too far back. I looked at my friends identical truck to confirm.

Is the ring gear fully seated on the flywheel ? I was replacing a clutch and got some longer bolts mixed with the clutch bolts, the longer bolts pressed the ring gear partially off the flywheel . When this happened the starter drive was only contacting the edge of the ring gear.
