starter not working.

starter not working.
I have an 1988 pickup
My battery just started dying and it had a hard time starting . So I took a extra battery that day and boosted it from there. So now this morning, the starter stopped working. I took my other vehicle and hooked it up booster cables. It now does not start at all.
It is pretty cold out (-6). I have tried lightly tapping the starter a few times with a metal bar.
Water has gone in my starter about a month ago.
Any ideas?

Jumping to conclusion.
Again jumping to conclusion and trying to replace something that may not be the root cause of the problem, so after the replacement the problem may still remain.
Yet the time and money are gone
By "not working" you mean it's getting power but not working, or not working because it's not getting power?
How do you know that? Did you take voltage measurements?
Our senses are the best and free diagnostic tools for our trucks. Do you hear anything? No clicks? starter not groaning, struggling to turn? Nothing at all when attempting to start?

Learn to read!!
Learn to trouble shoot!!
Get a multimeter buy or make all kind of test leads with all kinds of ends trust me you will use them.
Get the Toyota Electrical Wiring Diagrams for your year which even explain just how to use them.
Trying without just gets you so frustrated which you no doubt are all ready .
Are we working on the 4 or 6 cylinder?/
You knew you had a problem but just kept on going .
-6 do you have good jumper cables?? a good connection ??
A frozen battery more then likely won`t conduct electric but I never really tried to jump one so I don`t know.
Beating a starter with a dead battery only makes the starter mad about like a real cranky wife or girl friend

I've had a ˟˟˟˟ ton of starter problems too with my '86. For now, I'd say just replace the starter with the ˟˟˟˟ty auto parts store remanufactured starters. They are about 5lbs lighter than the stock Denso one, but they still turn over the 4cyl just fine. Don't give them your stock starter for the core charge back, learn how to rebuild it. A rebuilt Denso starter will be good to have on hand when the replacement starter goes (2-ish years).
It's not that hard to replace, I did it outside an O'Reillys when it was snowing out... not pleasant. Remove negative battery wires, disconnect relay wire then main power wire and after that it should be 2 bolts- top and bottom. 14mm wrench should do the trick. I got to lower bolt through the wheel well and top bolt through the EFI.
BTW this is for a 22RE not a 3.0

That can't be for a 22 series.

Besides the radiator messing up access. All that's down on the passenger side to speak of is the plenum support rod and oil filter. But that's also after I relocated my fuel filter to the fender well. That might be in the way but that would be it. I think. Maybe the charcoal canister but you should be able to do it

It is for the 22R series engine.
Easiest way to get the top bolt is from the front.
Pull the oil filter it is a piece of cake.
To install the top bolt one wrap of electrical tape keeps the bolt in the socket and allows you to pull the socket off.
The thing with a problem like this is it a starter issue??
Or is the starter problem the end result of another problem.
You rich people can just get a complete new starter circuit that way you have a good shot of getting the problem the first time maybe!!

YA now that I think of it, pulling the oil filter would have helped a ton. I went down through the EFI for the top bolt and was limited to 1/8" turns with a 2" long socket and a ton of hand cramps.
