Starter cranking with out key.

So I went to try and start the 4Runner today and of course it still doesn't want to start. However now the starter is continuing to turn over even with the key removed from the ignition. I pulled the battery terminal to stop it but have no idea what went wrong.

Stuck starter solenoid?

Damaged, or worn ignition switch?

Fused relay contacts?

Lottsa possibilities.

First thing would be to disconnect the starter solenoid lead (small wire at starter) and then re-connect the main battery cable.

If she still cranks, the prob is in the starter itself, otherwise, break out the VOM.

A lot of times we don't think too much about the hazards in a situation like this until it happens to us personally...I'm guilty also. In the best case, having the starter running for an extended period of time is bad for the starter and the battery. A fire or something like this is the worst case: http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/star...ded-70055.html Thanks for your post and Rad4Runner's post about a malfunctioning ignition switch causing the starter to continue running. I didn't think there was much of an issue with this and Toyota trucks until I read your posts. If you have the starter relay mounted on the fender, another quick way to stop the starter could be to disconnect the connector going to the relay. After my starter solenoid stuck, I redesigned my starter power circuit for safer and better operation. There was one thing I did as an anti-theft measure, but I think it can be helpful for this type of malfunction. I routed the the small starter wire through a relay. In order for the power to reach the starter solenoid the relay must be energized and the key must be turned to the start position... both things must occur at the same time for starter to receive power to energize. I energize the relay by pressing a hidden button in the cab that applies a ground to the relay. http://i1223.photobucket.com/albums/...sjipv.jpg.html

Good to know, but care to share how you fixed it, so we can also learn from your experience?

Yes, both good approaches.
In my case, I just put a kill-switch before load power to the starter relay.

It seems like the switch was sticking slightly. Jiggling the key a little released the contacts and shut down the starter. I am going to replace the switch as a safety precaution.

Same thing happened to mine. I replaced with OEM from Toyota Parts Deal.

BEWARE OF BECK-ARNLEY IGNITION SWITCH. MINE CAME APART AS I WAS INSTALLING IT. WHITE PLASTIC CAP POPPED OFF THE ASSEMBLY. WHEN I INSPECTED THE STOCK SWITCH IT IS VERY HARD TO REMOVE THAT WHITE CAP; MEANING THAT THE BECK-ARNLEY PRODUCT WAS PROBABLY NOT PRESSED PROPERLY DURING MANUFACTURING PROCESS, MEANING POOR QUALITY CONTROL IN ITS MANUFACTURING PROCESS.

Details here.

Looking at the assembly, it looks possible to inspect and clean the switch IF one could carefully disassemble and prevent parts from flying all over the place
