Hey guys. I needed to replace the contacts on my girlfriends 1995 4wd 4runner with a 22re.

The dealer gave me two of the same kits. I figured this starter used the same contacts on each side. I finally got the mofo out and pulled it apart. IT seems it uses a longer style contact on one side:

So my dealer is not open till tuesday, non of the parts stores have these things.. Can I use two of these style contacts in the starter instead?



This starter is really done, and needs the contacts badly. I only have time to do it today so im kinda in a bind here..

Or should I just clean the old contacts and put it back together till I can get the right ones...

Weird, I just did mine in the parking lot of a hotel in Chicago (huge fiasco) and they were both the same size.

Well, I was able to make the smaller one's work. I guess the motor side bolt is offset a VERY tiny amount. Like 5mm or so. The bigger style contact fits much better.

I mocked up the smaller one, it fits, the plunger hits it (alot of it!), I just had to file down one side of it to make sure it would clear 100%. Works great

That starter is a PITA to install!

hmm... I can R&R the starter in my 88 and my 91 in about 20 minutes.
yes, remove and replace.
...considering I have a new starter next to me.

Only one side erodes so use the largest one that will fit!Done a million of em.

don't get why it's such a hard job.
my 88 4runner has some trim that can be removed and lets you reach right over the wheel to the starter and pull it out.
and my 91 2wd only takes a little twist and the starter comes right out the top.

I dont know, for me its just a pita, maybe because i fail with wrenching, i dunno.
i just found it hard to get back in and to hold it in place and get the bolt lined up.

Next time you do one of these milestone quick starter changes. Video tape it with a real time timer showing the actual time and post it unedited.
Sorry bro,but Im having a hard time believing you can yank a starter out of a 91 runenr and have it back in,in less than 20 minutes. Im not a rocket scientist,but I do a lot of wrenching myself and I know an army of schooled and seasoned proffessional mechanics.
Are you using a lift? Power tools? Is half the truck and motor missing in the starter area?

Too bad it isn't like on a 1990 Camry, starter is out in 2 minutes after poping the hood. I think you need a 14mm socket, thats all if I recall.

even last year, I was up in Carson City, NV and the starter went out on my 88, and I had the truck towed to the autoparts store, yanked my starter, went in and had it tested, and walked out and installed the new one in 30 minutes, not including towing time.
I actually had the truck started with the new starter before the tow truck left the lot though.

Well, the only real difficulty was the Nut and stud between the starter and block. The whole stud came out and made instalation a pain. My hands are too big to get into those areas, removing the access panel was the best way to get at the starter..

On my truck I can get the starter out in minutes! I love body lifts
