starter on a 91 4wd pickup

i have a 91 4wd extended cab pickup with the v6 3.0 in it.

my starter went out, because some douche that changed my clutch broke it and only put it back on with one bolt holding it.

i went to take the starter out, and getting it off the bellhousing was relatively easy, but i can't seem to get it out of the engine compartment.

i don't know if im just crazy but after an hour of twisting it this way and that trying to get it out of the truck through in possible opening i gave up.

the way i see it the only way to get it out is to take apart part of my steering assembly which looks to be a pain.

any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Are you trying to get it out through the passenger wheel well access panel?

I ran into the same issue years ago, and even the FSM said NOTHING about the four bolt panel in the wheel well. Take your wheel off, pull the rubber flap loose,take the panel out, and the starter is right there.

You beat me to it. x2..its a magical little door. Makes life so much easier for changing starters and I would bet fuel filters too.

I see you have the v6. I just replaced the clutch in my 1992 extended cab v6 4WD. In the process you must remove the starter. I knew about the removable panel in the passenger side front wheel well, and tried hard to get the starter out through it, but it was no go.

I know other people have sworn it is possible, but it sure wasn't on my truck. It did not matter that much to me because I got it out after I pulled the tranny. I had the starter overhauled so I never have to deal with it again, I hope.

The one thing I did not try, but may help, is to raise the engine on its mounts a little bit to increase the room to remove the starter. This raises the exhaust manifold and might give enough room to get the starter out. Use a jack under the oil pan, and be very careful not to damage the motor mounts.
