started building a custom grill yesterday...
Sooo i just got my 1988 Toyota Pickup back from the body shop a few weeks ago and I've been trying to narrow down my list of getting it completed. The next thing i needed to do was get a grill. I didn't want a stock plastic piece of $#!t so i decided to make a custom one...
cut out a cardboard template for my side mounts
traced and cut it out of some 1/8" aluminum
sized it up
took some dimensions and cut out the front face
took the pieces down to my dad's shop to tack and weld 'em up
tryin out my dad's aluminum welder
test fitted it on
got the same curve as the hood and headlights !!
got it designed out on some paper and cardboard
not so well on the cardboard as the paper though haha but plan on getting it uniform and adding some more mounting tabs too.
more pics soon to come... let me know what you guys think

I love seeing threads like this, where people fabricate their own stuff! Very cool!
I love what you're doing, but I might suggest your design could play off the existing lines of the truck. The grille opening could line up with the bulge in the hood, coming down at angles that echo those shiny red shocks. Keeping lines straight and just radiusing the corners will look clean and will be easier to cut out.
Hope you don't mind my using your photo to illustrate what I mean:
Can't wait to see your final product!
