SR5 Cluster swap...how hard?

SR5 Cluster swap...how hard?

In my 87 Pickup I have the base model cluster with just a speedo, heat, and fuel gauge.

How hard would it be to swap it for an SR5 one with Tach, Speedo, heat, fuel, and oil PSI gauges?

I couldnt find it in the search tab...so ill ask.

Its very easy to do, and in most cases its a plug and play swap. You will need the SR5 cluster and the oil sending unit for it. If you don`t change the oil sending unit you will ruin the gauge as soon as you turn the key on. This has been covered many times here, and you can also do a google search for the information.

on my 87 with manual trans with an sr5 gauge from an auto truck I had to switch some of the pins inside the harness around. Can't remember what ones off hand though. I think I found the info on here or on google as far as which pins to switch. My truck was also not prewired for the tach, so I had to run a wire directly from the diagnostic port on the coil to a screw on the tach.

It's much easier if you grab one from a similar truck 4cyl - 4cyl manual to manual etc etc.

I got the one on my 86' 4Runner 5spd, 22re from an 87' pickup 5spd, 22re. So to change it was just unscrew the dash screws (i believe there are 8), unscrew the cluster from the dash (4 screws holding it in), disconnect the plugs that go to the cluster (there are 3 plugs) and (assuming you have a cable driven speedo) disconnect the speedo cable. Then follow this process in reverse when putting in your new cluster. Also you will have to put in the new oil pressure sending unit. This is also very easy. On your passenger side inside fender there are 4 bolts holding a little panel on. Remove them (i believe they are 10mm but they could be 12mm). There you will see a small circular knob looking thing with a wire coming out of it (see picture below, ignore Edward Norton).



That simply unscrews (i believe its a 24mm socket that fits it). You then unscrew the wire that is attached to it. (i believe its a phillips head screw). Then you screw the new oil pressure sending unit in, and re-attach the wire and you will be good to go!

Getting ready to do mine as well, ordered a dash in from Colorado, but they shipped me one from a 89-95 truck ! Anyone looking for one of those , LMK, has 156k showing on it, 4 cyl, 5 speed

How bright are those lights you installed, will they dim down off the switch ?

They are a tad bit brighter than the stock bulbs and no they do not dim down.

Thats what I thought. For those interested, Autometer makes a dimmer for their line of LED gauges. I'm sure some one here could wire one up to work with the stock set up on our trucks .

No because it came off a truck that had the same engine as mine (22re) if you get one from a truck/4Runner with a different engine then you will have to re-calibrate the tach.

Ok cool. I have a 22r but idk if they had those clusters in trucks/runners with 22r's.
