Hey guys
I'm new to this forum, and I'm hopin to get some advice/info with a problem on my 95 4Runner.

The speedometer and odometer both quit workin, so I had the speedometer cable replaced. It worked for about 30km and then quit again.

I then figured it was the speedo head, so I put in a used one from a wrecker. Didn't work. My buddy says the problem then has to be in the transfer case with the gear that spins the speedo cable, which requires an entirely new transfer case.

Has anyone encountered the same problem with their runner?

How much would you figure a new transfer case would cost to have fixed, including labour?

Pretty sure you don't need a new t case

Even if you did, you could probably get one for $75 at a yard.

I'm having the same problem... however, I figured it out from some other posts and will fix it tomorrow.

Here's what I found... it is the VSS (vehicle speed sensor). And not the one you would think (back on rear axle), but it is actually on the tranny. However, you won't have to replace the TC-- the VSS comes off with one bolt and is easily replaceable.

However, from all the price checks I've done I would say $200 is a really good deal for a new one($250 is standard). That said, if you check with your auto salvage yards you can pick one up for $30-90.00

Its about a 15 minute install... just make sure that you get the correct one, because if the gear head on the VSS is different than what you originally had you could have a situation on your hands where you're getting 80 miles clocked for every 40 miles driven.

I'm now trying to figure out if a VSS on a 4x4, '94 4runner, manual is the same as a VSS on a 4x4, '94 4runner, auto.

I know mine is the A340H, and I believe the donor is the same... I'd really hope they are compatible since I could get this one for $30.

Any help is appreciated.

I thought they switched back to a cable instead of the sensor for 95 models. I thought 92-94 had speed sensors and everything else had a cable. Do a forum search with speed sensor- or- speedo quit- something like that will get some better advice.
