speedometer 'freaking out'

The speedometer of our 1992 4-runner just stops working every now and then, but normally would kick back in after a few minutes of driving.
Not really a big problem since the engine runs fine during those moments.

But now it somethings moves all the way to max.speed or jumps, causing the engine to rev out and change gears not knowing what to do.
My first thoughts are the speed-sensor.

After some searching I came across this post about the speed-sensor rebuilt.
But I also came across this new part for only 16 bucks.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VSS-Vehicle-Speed-Sensor-for-Chevy-Geo-Toyota-Carolla-Camry-83181-12020-/161575035413?fits=Make%3AToyota%7CModel%3A4Runner&hash=item259e9f6215&vxp=mtr
It looks like the right part to me.
Any thoughts?

You can take the part number they give, and go to a dealer site like http://www.toyotapartsoverstock.com/...rm=83181-12020 That will tell you the speed sensor is for a Mexican-spec vehicle. Then, you could look up the "right" part number for your vehicle, and see which other vehicles it fits.

But $16 (plus shipping), compared to $200-$300, means (to me) it's in the "it can't hurt to try it" category. As long as the photo looks like yours (the differences are pretty easy to see), I'd go for it.

Hey thanks for your reply.
A handy site, and well; 'This product fits TOYOTA: 14 models, 956 variants between 1990 and 2011', at least my car falls into that category.

Yeah, I give it a shot and I will post the result.
