Speedo Cable install problems
My speedometer was not working so last week when i was at advance i picked one up for 20$. Just now got the chance to install it, pulled the old one, and reinstalled the new one, fairly simple, besides the old one managed to get hung on everything so being that it was 100 degrees outside i cut it in half.
Well after i got the new one installed i plugged the cluster back up, made sure my lines were snug and not going to catch on anything as it was a lil longer, and then i went for a drive.
When i first put it in drive it kinda bounced a few times below the 10mph mark, and that was it. it wouldnt move anymore..
im assuming that the speedo cable also moves the odometer and trip meter, b/c neither is working....
has anyone had any problems with these?
( i did lube the cable before install, it slides out and i slid it back in while applying the lube)

Yeah the cable does roll the odometer too
I'd pull the cluster back out and make sure it's clipped onto the back of the speedo right. It'll slide on and you'll hear and feel a "click" when it snaps in all the way.

hey super,
when i installed in i made sure i heard the click, but i just went to diagnose it to make sure.
I jacked up the read end and put it in drive, and no speed is registering.
i took the cluster back apart, and this time watched the "lil spinning thing", it did spin.
something i did notice when i was changing them out, the "male piece" that goes in the back near the drive shaft was longer on the OE one, it seems that the "male piece" on the new one was shorter so it had to slide in further, thus causing the part that spins the speedo to slide out and not be able to reach?!?
make sense? is there anything i can do to fab this to make it work or??

Well, i got to thinking and i went to advance auto online, and searched it myself, and funny thing is, all i could find was a part number for a MANUAL transmission. So i grabbed my reciept and sure enough they gave me one for a MANUAL transmission. Wouldnt this be a key question to ask the customer...Ive been outside sweating in 100 degrees to only find out i was given the wrong one.
Thank you ADVANCE AUTO PARTS.

well yeah that might be a problem...
you have to watch those Advance Auto Parts guys... I worked at one for about 2 1/2 years, and some of them I wouldn't trust to look up a windshield wiper for me Always look up your own parts; they should have one computer that faces outwards towards the sales floor
try searching online for different years (89-94). Sometimes, for whatever reason, it'll show for some years, and not others

OK.
THE Speedo Cable from NAPA is the BOMB DIGGITY.
it came pre-lubed ready for install, went in nearly effortlessly, plus it was alot thicker and felt more durable then the horrible one i got from advance. And the best part is...IT WORKED.
it was only 21.95 after tax (i think) so im not going to complain about saving 120$ of my money going to the dealer.
I will say i was not expecting it to work, and have found multiple places online to get them for <50$ one place was even advertised as HEAVY DUTY and was custom made for your application...
Just wanted to update. I can post the part # if anyone wants.
